On behalf of the Council appointed Naming Committee at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), we call on all stakeholders in the interactive process of actively engaging and participating in the Renaming and Rebranding of the identities of the 31 student-residences and day houses.
This process is part of various strategic phases from the well-managed merger of the former Rand Afrikaans University (RAU), Technikon Witwatersrand (TWR) and Vista University in 2005, to focus on the institutional culture. As the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University, Prof Ihron Rensburg states, “We are mindful of the inclusivity of all stakeholders – past and present – the transparency in which this process is being conducted and most importantly the commitment and enthusiasm displayed by the students themselves. No one will feel left out when this process is finally completed. The sensitivity of the committee in addressing the whole transformation agenda is highly impressive.”
The residences and day houses are currently named:
APB: Broadcast Court, Ikhaya Lethu, Panorama, Goudstad, Majuba, Horison;
APK: Amper Daar, Benjamijn, Kruinsig, Lebone, Skoonveld, Afslaan, Bastion, Dromedaris, Oppierif, Student Town, Alomdraai, Annirand, Kanniedood, Vorendag, Gloucester House;
DFC: Abeilles, Dale Lace, Habitat, Robin Crest, Sivebeek, Sun Valley, Aurum, Jeunesse;
SWC: Pishon of Soviet, New Residence currently under construction.
*The renaming will exclude Sophiatown and Hector Pieterson.
This year, as the University celebrates its first decade, UJ invites the entire UJ community, old and new, to take part in the process of renaming our residences to reflect the UJ vision.
Please note that for record keeping purposes ONLY electronic nominations will be accepted. Furthermore, we will only accept nominations submitted on the Naming Committee approved Nomination Form. In addition, we ask Line Managers to accommodate those colleagues who do not have access to computers and the internet, to assist them in the nomination process.
