INLEIDING
In die gang van die normale werksaamhede van die Universiteit, het die Biblioteek deur middel van skenkings en bemakings ‘n kosbare versameling waardevolle boeke en manuskripte opgebou, wat van groot inligtingswaarde vir studente en navorsers is. Dit het so ontwikkel dat die versameling uiteindelik in ‘n ruim, doelmatige lokaal tereggekom het, waar dit deur deskundige personeel in stand gehou en vir gebruikers toeganklik gemaak word.
In die verlede is daar gekonsentreer op die geskiedenis van die Afrikaanse en Griekse gemeenskappe aan die Witwatersrand, maar in ooreenstemming met die ryke geskiedenis van die verlede en die belangrike bydrae van ander kultuurgroepe, onder andere van histories-benadeelde gemeenskappe, verskuif die fokus van die versameling nou ook na die insluiting van materiaal oor hierdie groepe.
Die toevoeging van die omvangryke N.J. Van Warmelo-skenking bied byvoorbeeld ‘n kosbare blik op die kultuur van die swart volke in Suid-Afrika en Namibië.
Die Universiteitsargief, wat die geskiedenis en die wese van die Universiteit sedert sy ontstaan weerspieël, word ook op die perseel van die Seldsame Boekeversameling gehuisves.
Geselekteerde materiaal op uitstalling op die 3de vloer foyer van die Biblioteek.

INTRODUCTION
In the course of the normal functioning of the University, the Library accumulated, by means of donations and bequests, a precious collection of valuable books and manuscripts of great information value to students and researchers. The collection developed to such an extent that it is justifiably housed in a spacious and effective location, where expert personnel maintain and make it accessible to users.
Previously the collection focused on the history of the Afrikaans and Greek communities on the Witwatersrand. In line with the important historical contribution by other cultural groups, inter alia by historically disadvantaged communities, the focus of the collection has now shifted to include material from these groups as well. The acquisition of the extensive N.J. Van Warmelo donation, for instance, provides valuable insight into the culture of the black tribes of South Africa and Namibia.
The University Archives, which reflect the university's history and character since its founding, are also housed on the premises of the Rare Book Collection.

UJ-ARGIEF
Die argief van die Universiteit van Johannesburg poog om die geskiedenis en die wese van die universiteit sedert sy ontstaan te weerspieël.
Die argief bevat amptelike primêre bronne, soos die notules van die Dagbestuur, Raad, Senaat en Uitvoerende Komitee, eksamenvraestelle en genommerde omsendbriewe, asook sekondêre bronne, soos departementele tydskrifte, studentblaaie, koerante en algemene publikasies.
Die einddoel is om dokumente met permanente navorsingswaarde, geproduseer deur die studente, dosente en personeel van die universiteit, aan te skaf, te bewaar en aan belangstellende navorsers beskikbaar te stel.
Alle proefskrifte en verhandelings deur universiteitstudente word ook bewaar.

THE UJ ARCHIVES
The library strives to reflect, through its archives, the University’s history and character since its founding.
The archives contain official primary documents, e.g. the minutes of the Management Committee, Board, Senate and Executive Committee, examination papers and numbered circulars, as well as secondary documents, e.g. departmental journals, student magazines, newspapers and general publications.
The ultimate aim is to acquire, preserve and place at the disposal of interested researchers documents with permanent research value, produced by the university’s students, lecturers and personnel.
In addition, all treatises and theses by University students are preserved.

Hierdie versameling Franse Africana, waarskynlik die beste in die land, is in 1976 op ‘n permanente bruikleenbasis deur prof. Jan Boyazoglu aan die Universiteit geskenk. Prof. Boyazoglu, wat lank landbou-attachè aan die Suid Afrikaanse ambassade in Parys was, het die materiaal in die sestigerjare, toe hy ‘n student in Parys was, versamel.
Die inhoud van die versameling weerspieël die Franse betrokkenheid by die Suid-Afrikaanse geskiedenis en sluit o.a. die volgende materiaal in:
- materiaal wat met vroeë reise na die Kaap en binneland verband hou.
- geskrifte van Franse sendelinge gedurende die vroeë deel van die 19de eeu:
- dokumente oor die Franse houding oor en indrukke van die Anglo-Boereoorlog
- Franse betrokkenheid by die ontwikkeling van mynindustrieë in Suid-Afrika;
- ‘n versameling Boereoorlog-aandenkings, onder andere porsleinware, speelgoed, ens.

In 1976, Prof. J.G. Boyazoglu, then Counselor (Agricultural Technical) at the South African Embassy in Paris, donated on permanent loan to the University this unique collection of French Africana, perhaps the most comprehensive on the subject in South Africa. He acquired the items, while studying in Paris in the nineteen-sixties.
The collection comprises material illustrating French involvement in South African history, including the following:
- material relating to the early French journeys to the Cape and South African interior;
- descriptions of the role played by French missionaries in Southern Africa in the early
nineteenth century;
- documents regarding the French attitude to and observations during the Boer War;
- documents on French involvement in the development of the mining industry in South Africa;
- a collection of Boer-War memorabilia, e.g. porcelain, toys, etc.
Most of the memorabilia are on permanent display in glass-fronted show-cases (third floor foyer of the Library)

N.P. VAN WYK LOUW-BOEKERY
NP van Wyk Louw was nie net skrywer en digter nie, maar ook een van die mees belese mense in die Afrikaanse literêre wêreld. ‘n Blywende bewys hiervan is sy persoonlike boekery, wat ongeveer 7500 monografiese werke en 58 tydskriftitels insluit.
Ongeveer die helfte van die boekery bestaan uit Afrikaanse en Nederlandse literêre werke. Die Afrikaanse versameling weerspieël die literatuurgeskiedenis van sy ontstaan tot 1970. Die Nederlandse literatuur bevat feitlik alles van belang van die middeleeue tot ongeveer 1970: pragtige foliante van die werke van P.C. Hooft, verskeie werke van Joost van den Vondel en J. Cats, ens. in perkament gebind. Die Engelse, Franse en Duitse letterkunde is ook goed verteenwoordig.
Die omvattende geskiedenisversameling getuig daarvan dat nasies en lotgevalle Van Wyk Louw geboei het. Die Suid-Afrikaanse geskiedenis was na aan sy hart en hy het werke van belangrike geskiedskrywers aangeskaf.
Ander prominente versamelings handel oor godsdiens, filosofie, opvoedkunde en politiek. Die vernaamste denkers op hierdie gebiede is goed verteenwoordig.

N.P. VAN WYK LOUW COLLECTION
N.P. van Wyk Louw was not only an author and poet, but also one of the most well-read persons on the Afrikaans literary scene, as his book collection, which includes of 7 500 monographs and 58 journal titles, proves.
Roughly half of the collection consists of literary works, mostly in Afrikaans and Dutch. The Afrikaans section reflects Afrikaans literary history from its inception to 1970. The Dutch literature section includes all the important works from the Middle Ages to circa 1970 – exquisite parchment bound tomes by P.C. Hooft, Joost van den Vondel and J. Cats, etc. English French and German literature are also well represented.
The extensive history section proves that Van Wyk Louw was fascinated by the tales of nations and their destinies.
Other prominent subjects in the collection are religion, philosophy, education and politics. The most important thinkers in these fields are well represented.

In die Africana-versameling bewaar die Biblioteek gedrukte materiaal oor Afrika, gepubliseer in Afrika of geskryf deur mense wat in Afrika woon, maar wat voor 1925 gepubliseer is. Daar word veral gekonsentreer op werke wat skaars en waardevol is, ‘n beperkte oplaag het en buitengewoon is. Publikasies oor Gauteng word ook selektief aangekoop.
Waardevolle werke is ook met die ontstaan van die universiteit van verskeie skenkers ontvang. ‘n Interessante skenking was dié van mnr. H. Austen, wat in 1968 tussen ou boeke op ‘n vullishoop die volgende seldsame werke ontdek het: Francois le Vaillant se Reizen in de binnelanden van Afrika (‘n 1791-vertaling van die Franse oorspronklike), John Campbell se Herinneringen uit mijn drie en twintigjarig verblijf in Zuid-Afrika (‘n 1849- vertaling van die Engelse oorspronklike).
Dr. Cor Pama se groot Africana-versameling is met die totstandkoming van die Biblioteek aangekoop. Dit sluit onder andere baie skaars werke, soos dié van G. Lauts (1861), Bogaert (1711), C.F. Brink (1788), O. Dapper (1676) en P. Kolbe (1727), in. Dr. Pama het veral gekonsentreer op die Afrikaans-Nederlandse aspek van die Suid-Afrikaanse
Resente waardevolle Africana werke, veral op die gebied van die plantkunde en dierkunde, word ook in die versameling bewaar, byvoorbeeld ‘n volledige stel van die tydskrif Flowering plants of South Africa (1921-) en The birds of Africa deur L.H. Brown, et al.

In this collection the library strives to preserve material printed before 1925. The focus is on rare, valuable and exceptional publications, as well as on limited edition titles.
At the founding of the University the Library received valuable publications from various donors. Mr. H. Austen donated an interesting collection of rare books, including Francois le Vaillant’s Reizen in de binnelanden van Africa (a 1791 Dutch translation of the French original), John Campbell’s Travels in South Africa (1815) and Robert Moffat’s Herrinneringen uit mijn drie en twintigjarige verblijf in Zuid-Afrika (a 1948 Dutch translation of the English original).
In addition, the library bought a large collection from Dr.. Cor Pama, who concentrated on the Afrikaans-Dutch aspect of South African history. This collection includes many rare works, authored by G. Lauts (1861), A. Bogaert (1711), C.F. Brink (1788), O. Dapper (1676) and P. Kolbe (1727), to name but a few..
Recent valuable Africana, especially on botany and zoology, are also preserved in the collection, e.g. a complete set of the journal Flowering plants of South Africa (1921-) and L.H. Brown’s The birds of South Africa.

SELDSAME BOEKEVERSAMELING
Alle boeke, uitsluitend Africana, wat geklassifeer word as skaars, waardevol of buitengewoon, maak deel uit van die Biblioteek se Seldsame Boekeversameling. Dit sluit die volgende kategorieë in: boeke met ‘n beperkte oplaag, wat deur die outeur onderteken is, boeke met spesiale bindwerk of wat besondere illustrasies bevat, of wat voor 1850 gepubliseer is. Volumes, soos die versameling wette en regsinterpretasie van Justinianus ( 529 – 565), dateer selfs uit 1566.
T.S. Eliot se gedig Marina is in 1930 op spesiale handgemaakte papier gedruk en deur hom onderteken. Slegs 400 eksemplare is gedruk, waarvan no. 202 in die SBV-versameling opgeneem is.
‘n Ander waardevolle item in die versameling is The treasures of Mount Athos: illuminated manuscripts, wat in 1974 gepubliseer is. Hierdie voorbeelde van die Bisantynse kuns was tot en met publikasie ontoeganklik vir navorsers. Die besondere kleur-illustrasies van die manuskripte bied ‘n outentieke blik op die Bisantynse wêreld.

THE RARE BOOK COLLECTION
This collection contains books identified as rare, valuable or exceptional, i.e. limited edition titles, specially bound or illustrated books, books signed by the author or published prior to 1850, e.g. Justinian’s Institutionum sive primorum totius iurisprudentiae elementorum libri quatuor, published in 1566.
The collection includes no. 202 of the limited edition of 400 copies of T.S. Eliot’s poem Marina, printed in 1930 on special handmade paper and signed by the author.
Another valuable item is The treasures of Mount Athos: illuminated manuscripts. It contains examples of Byzantine art inaccessible to researchers until the publication of this book in 1974. The exceptional colour illustrations of the manuscripts are an authentic reflection of the Byzantine world.

Die Jesuïete-Orde het in 1990 hulle boekeversameling vir bewaring in permanente bruikleen aan die Biblioteek toevertrou. Die grootste deel van die versameling bestaan uit teologiese en kerkhistoriese werke, asook waardevolle Africana en ou drukke. Van die besondere items is, onder andere, die vroegste woordeboeke in Suid-Afrikaanse swart tale, die GRA se Geskiedenis van ons land in die taal van ons volk (1877) en die handgeskrewe tydskrif, The Museumite, wat van 1916 tot 1920 vir private sirkulasie by die St. Aidan-klooster in Grahamstad deur Vader P. Stapleton uitgegee is.

In 1990, The Society of Jesus entrusted to the library, on a permanent loan basis, the safe-keeping of their book collection. The bulk of the collection comprises works on theology and church history, as well as valuable Africana and old prints. These exceptional items include, inter alia, the earliest dictionaries of the South African black languages, the GRA’s Geskiedenis van ons land in die taal van ons volk (1877) and the handwritten journal, The Museumite, which was published from 1916 to 1920 by Father P. Stapleton, for private circulation at the St. Aidan Monastery in Grahamstown

DE VLEESCHAUWER-VERSAMELING
Die versameling van prof. H.J. de Vleeschauwer, biblioteekkundige en filosoof, bestaan grotendeels uit wysgerige boeke. Werke, wat voor 1850 gepubliseer is, is by die Seldsame Boekeversameling as aparte versameling opgeneem.
Die meeste van die boeke is óf in Latyn óf in Frans en sluit outeurs soos Bacon, Von Humboldt, Spencer en Locke in. Sommige van die boeke besit nog hul oorspronklike leergebinde omslae, soos byvoorbeeld H. Grotius se Dissertationes de studiis instituendis, wat reeds in 1645 gepubliseer is.

DE VLEESCHAUWER COLLECTION
The collection of Prof. H.J. de Vleeschauwer, librarian and philosopher, consists mainly of books on philosophy.
Books published before 1850 were, however, transferred as a special collection to the Rare Book Collection.
Most of the books in the collection are in Latin or French by famous authors, e.g. Bacon, Von Humboldt, Spencer and Locke. Some volumes still retain their original leather bindings, e.g. H. Grotius’ Dissertationes de studiis instituendis, which was published in 1645.

PONT-VERSAMELING
Wyle prof. Daniel Pont het reeds met die stigting van die Universiteit baie waardevolle en ou bronne van die Romeins-Hollandse Reg aan die Biblioteek geskenk.
Een van hierdie bronne, ‘n werk van Bartolus dateer uit 1563. Bekende ou skrywers soos Cornelis van Bijnkershoek, Simon van Leeuwen, Hugo de Groot, Johannes Voet, ens., se boeke vorm deel van hierdie skenking.
Met sy afsterwe in 1991, het prof. Pont ‘n latere skenking van Suid-Afrikaanse en Nederlandse boeke aan die Universiteit bemaak.

PONT COLLECTION
At the founding of the University, the late Prof. Daniel Pont donated a considerable and very valuable collection of Roman Dutch Law source material to the Library.
Works of famous authors, e.g. Cornelius van Bijnkershoek, Simon van Leeuwen, Hugo de Groot, Johannes Voet , etc., were included in this original donation. One item, a publication by Bartolus, dates from 1563.
In 1991, Prof. Pont bequeathed to the University a second donation of South African and Dutch books.

Meer as ‘n duisend pamflette is tot op datum op ‘n lokale bibliografiese databasis ingevoer. Die pamflette dek ‘n wye veld, en sluit ook supplemente en bylaes tot koerante en tydskrifte, in. Hierdie versameling groei voortdurend. Rig navrae aan personeel van die Afdeling.

PAMPHLET COLLECTION
Approximately 1000 pamphlets have been catalogued on a local bibliographic database. The collection covers a wide variety of subjects and includes supplements and appendices to newspapers and magazines. The collection grows continually and can be accessed through the Department.

FOTOVERSAMELING
Die fotoversameling bestaan uit foto’s wat uit verskillende versamelings onttrek en in een hoofversameling geïnkorporeer is. Beskrywings van die foto’s is op ‘n plaaslike bibliografiese databasis in die afdeling beskikbaar.

PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTION
The photographic collection contains photographs retrieved from various collections and incorporated into one main collection. Descriptions of the photographs are available on a local bibliographic database in the Department.

TEBA
Die Argief van die Employment Bureau of South Africa (algemeen bekend as Teba) is in 2004 op ‘n semi-permanente basis na die UJ Kingsway kampus vanaf Teba geskuif. Teba Bpk is gestig met die uitsluitlike doel om mynwerkers vir die groeiende Witwatersrand mynindustrie te werf en aan te stel. Teba het begin as twee verskillende maatskappye, nl. WNLA (Witwatersrand Native Labour Association) in 1901, en NRC (Native Recruiting Association) in 1912. WNLA was verantwoordelik vir die werwing van mynwerkers buite Suid-Afrika, en NRC was verantwoordelik vir die werwing van mynwerkers binne Suid-Afrika se grense.
Die versameling is ‘n unieke primêre inligtingsbron vir navorsing oor arbeidswerwing vir die goudmyne en bevat inligting oor diverse onderwerpe soos migrasiepatrone, weerpatrone, sosiale toestande, gesondheidsverwante onderwerpe, vervoer en nog baie ander.

TEBA
The Archives of the Employment Bureau of South Africa (commonly known as TEBA) was moved from Teba to the UJ Kingsway Campus at the end of 2004 on a semi-permanent loan basis. Teba Ltd was established with the objective of assisting the growing Witwatersrand mining industry in sourcing and engaging mine workers. Teba started as two different companies, i.e. WNLA (Witwatersrand Native Labour Association) in 1901, and NRC (Native Recruiting Corporation) in 1912. WNLA recruited mineworkers outside South Africa, and NRC recruited mineworkers within the borders of South Africa.
The collection is an unique primary information source for research on labour recruitment for the gold mines and contains information on diverse subjects such as migration patterns, weather patterns, social conditions, health related matters, transport and many others.

EUGÈNE NIELEN MARAIS-VERSAMELING
Dié oorspronklike manuskripte en dokumente is in 1991 deur bemiddeling van Perskor deur die Universiteit in besit geneem. Dit bestaan uit die oorspronklike handgeskrewe en getikte manuskripte van The soul of the ape, wat deur Marais self as sy meesterwerk beskou is. ‘n Aantal briewe van Marais aan sy seun (1916-1923) en korrespondensie, wat sy seun met ‘n oorsese tydskrif oor beweerde plagiaat uit Marais se boek Burgers van die berge (1952) gevoer het, vorm ook deel van die versameling.
‘n Verdere interessante item is Marais se skets- en aantekeningboek met notas, konsepte van artikels en potloodsketse (onder andere van ‘n jong meisie Susanne), wat hy tydens sy verblyf in Londen gedurende die Anglo-Boereoorlog (1899-1902) gemaak het.

EUGÈNE NIELEN MARAIS COLLECTION
In 1991, the University received this collection of manuscripts and documents by the agency of Perskor.
The collection includes the original hand-written and typed manuscripts of The soul of the ape, considered by the author as his masterpiece, as well as some letters from Marais to his son (1916 – 1923) and correspondence, between his son and the editor of an overseas journal, regarding the alleged plagiarism of Marais’ book Burgers van die berge (1952).
Another interesting item in the collection is Marais’ sketch- and note-book, containing notes, ideas for articles and pencil sketches (inter alia of a young lady called Suzanne), executed during his sojourn in London at the time of the Anglo Boer War, 1899 – 1902.

AFRIKANER AAN DIE WITWATERSRAND-VERSAMELING
In 1967, met die stigting van die Universiteit, is ‘n navorsingsprojek oor die Afrikaanse gemeenskap aan die Rand, onder leiding van die Departement Historiese Studies van die Universiteit, aangepak.
Die dokumente handel spesifiek oor die tydperk 1886-1961 en verskaf inligting oor die politieke, ekonomiese, sosiaal-maatskaplike, opvoedkundige, religieuse en kulturele aktiwiteite van die Randse Afrikaner.
Die dokumente bestaan uit 131 indiviuele versamelings en bevat ‘n wye verskeidenheid materiaal, onder andere dagboeke, private en amptelike korrespondensie, herinneringe, biografiese geskrifte, manuskripte, jaarverslae van organisasies, notules en bylaes, finansiële verslae, toesprake en foto’s.
Organisasies wat gedek word is, onder andere, die Afrikaanse Dameskring (Johannesburgtak), Afrikaanse Sakekamer, F.A.K., Gebiedskultuurraad (Rand-Sentraal), Maria van Riebeeckklub, Nywerheidsontwikkelingskorporasie en Witwatersrandse Toneelvereniging.

AFRIKANER ON THE WITWATERSRAND COLLECTION
At the founding of the University in 1967, a research project on the history of the Afrikaans community on the Witwatersrand was launched under the auspices of the History Department of the University.
The documents, covering the period 1886 – 1961, provide information on the political, economic, social, educational, religious and cultural activities of the Afrikaner on the Rand.
The collection consists of 131 individual collections and contains a rich diversity of diaries, private and official correspondence, memoirs, biographies, manuscripts, annual reports of organizations, their minutes and annexures, financial reports, speeches, photos, etc.
Inter alia, the following organizations are covered:
Afrikaanse Dameskring (Johannesburg Branch), Afrikaanse Sakekamer, F.A.K., Gebiedskultuurraad (Rand Central), Maria van Riebeek Club, Industrial Development Corporation, Witwatersrandse Toneelvereniging, etc.

H.G. VILJOEN-DOKUMENTE
Prof. G. Van N. Viljoen, gewese rektor van die Universiteit, het interesante materiaal van sy vader, dr. H.G. Viljoen, op sy dag redakteur van Die Huisgenoot (1923-1931), aan die Biblioteek geskenk. Dit sluit oorspronlike handgeskrewe gedigte en briewe van A.G. visser, C.J. Langenhoven, T.J. Haarhoff en C.M. van den Heever, asook sketse van Erich Mayer, Gerard Moerdyk, Gregoire Boonzaier, 4 tekeninge van Pierneef, ens., in.
Daar is ook vier handgeskrewe artikelsoor miere, wat Eugène Marias vir Die Huisgenoot geskryf het.

H.G. VILJOEN DOCUMENTS
Prof. G. van N. Viljoen, former rector of the University, donated to the Library interesting material inherited from his father, Dr. H.G. Viljoen, editor of Die Huisgenoot (1923–1931).
This collection comprises hand-written poems and letters by A.G. Visser, C.J. Langenhoven, T.J. Haarhof and C.M. van den Heever, four hand-written articles for Die Huisgenoot by Eugène Marais, as well as sketches by artists, such as Erich Mayer, Gerard Moerdyk and Gregoire Boonzaier, four drawings by J.H. Pierneef, etc.

BAKKER-VERSAMELING
Die dokumentasie van Gerrit Bakker, antikwariaathandelaar van Johannesburg, bevat ‘n groot hoeveelheid korrespondensie, waaronder dié van die Nederlandse digter en kritikus, Jan Greshoff, Elizabeth Eybers en ‘n gesensoreerde brief van Uys Krige aan sy ouers, geskryf toe hy gedurende die Tweede Wêreldoorlog krygsgevangene in Italië was.
Die Greshoff-korrespondensie begin reeds voor die familie Europa verlaat het om hul in 1939 in Suid-Afrika te vestig en duur tot in die sestigerjare. Greshoff se betrokkenheid by die kulturele lewe in Suid-Afrika en sy bydrae tot die Afrikaanse en Nederlandse letterkunde vind neerslag in hierdie korrespondensie.
Bakker het nie net ‘n groot liefde en ‘n natuurlike aanvoeling vir alles wat kuns is gehad nie, maar was ook ‘n meester van die kook- en onthaalkuns. Die manuskrip van sy ongepubliseerde outobiografie, verskeie foto-albums en sy resepteboek vorm ook deel van die versameling.

THE BAKKER COLLECTION
The documentation donated to the library by Gerrit Bakker, Johannesburg antiquarian bookseller, includes a vast volume of correspondence; letters from the Dutch poet and critic, Jan Greshoff, letters from Elizabeth Eybers, as well as a censored letter written by Uys Krige to his parents, when he was held as a prisoner of war in Italy.
The Greshoff correspondence started before 1939, when the family left Europe to settle in South Africa and continued well into the nineteen sixties. The correspondence bears witness to Greshoff’s involvement in South African cultural life and to his contribution to Afrikaans and Dutch literature.
Bakker not only loved and was attuned to all forms of art, but was also a gourmet cook and entertainer par excellence. Thus, the collection includes the manuscript of Bakker’s unpublished autobiography, several photo albums and his recipe book.

MISSAK-VERSAMELING
Julien Minas Missak (1906-1980), ‘n gebore Belg met ‘n Armeense vader en ‘n Vlaamse moeder, het in 1950 vanaf België na Suid-Afrika geëmigreer. Hy het in Westcliff in ‘n herehuis gewoon en met sy dood baie waardevolle items en dokumente aan die Universiteit nagelaat. ‘n Groot versameling uiters seldsame Oosterse matte, asook artefakte, skilderye, dokumente en boeke is na die Biblioteek vir veilige bewaring oorgebring.
Die belangrikste dokumente staan bekend as die Ottomaanse Missak-Argief en bestaan uit ongeveer 500 Ottomaanse, Armeense, Franse en Griekse dokumente en ou familiefoto’s, wat die geskiedenis en genealogie van die Missak-dinastie binne die Ottomaanse Ryk uitwys.
Mnr. Missak het ook ‘n groot aantal boeke versamel, waaronder daar baie seldsame, ou en waardevolle leergebonde boeke oor onderwerpe soos geskiedenis, filosofie, godsdiens, demonologie, towerkuns, Franse en antieke Griekse letterkunde, en medisyne, is.

MISSAK COLLECTION
Julien Minas Missak (1906-1980) was born in Belgium, the son of an Armenian father and a Flemish mother. In 1950 he emigrated to South Africa. He lived in a mansion in Westcliff and donated many valuable items to the University. A large collection of very rare Oriental carpets, artifacts, paintings, documents and books were transferred for safekeeping to the Library.
The most important items are known as the Ottoman Missak Archives, consisting of almost 500 Ottoman, Armenian, French and Greek documents and old family photographs, which trace the history and genealogy of the Missak dynasty in the Ottoman Empire.
Mr. Missak also collected a great number of books, including very old, rare and valuable leather-bound volumes, covering subjects such as history, philosophy, religion, demonology, the occult, French and Ancient Greek literature, medicine, etc

GRIEKSE ARGIEF
Die Suid-Afrikaanse tak van die Lyceum of Greek Women het in 1991 begin met die insamel en byeenbring van materiaal oor die Griekse gemeenskap in Suid-Afrika. Die resultaat was die ontstaan van die Suid-Afrikaanse Griekse Argief in samewerking met die Grieks en Latynse Departement onder beheer van prof. Ben Hendrickx. Dit sluit oorspronklike dokumente, foto’s, koerante en gepubliseerde materiaal in. In 1996, op aanbeveling van Dr. Maria Katrakis (destydse voorsitter van die Lyceum), is die versameling na die Universiteit se Departement Griekse en Latynse Studies oorgebring. Na onderhandelings is besluit om die Suid-Afrikaanse Griekse Argief aan die Seldsame Boekeversameling vir berging, bewaring en gebruik deur navorsers, te oorhandig.
Die Griekse Argief het in November 2000 ‘n waardevolle skenking van mnr. E. Bertolis ontvang, naamlik ‘n volledige stel van die unieke Suid-Afrikaanse Griekse koerant, Ellenikos Tupos. Publikasie van hierdie koerant is in 1908 begin en in 1998 gestaak.
Die fotoversameling is ‘n reisende fotografiese uitstalling wat onder andere na Thessalonika in Griekeland gestuur is en baie goed deur die Griekse pers ontvang is.
Daar wod gereeld nuwe materiaal ontvang en bygevoeg. Die versameling staan nog onder beheer van die Lyceum of Greek Women.

GREEK ARCHIVES
Since 1991, the South African Branch of the Lyceum of Greek Women has been collecting material on the Greek community in South Africa. In 1996 Dr. Maria Katrakis, then Chairperson of the Lyceum, recommended that this Collection, consisting of original documents, photographs, newspapers and published material, be transferred to the Department of Greek and Latin Studies. After consultation, it was decided to move the Greek Archives to the Rare Book Collection, where a separate locale was available for storing, safekeeping and the use of the material by researchers.
In November 2000 Mr. E. Bertolis further augmented the Greek Archives by donating a valuable complete set of the South African Greek newspaper, Ellenikos Tupos (1908-1998).
The photograph collection is a travelling photographic exhibition, which has, among others, been sent to Thessalonica and has been very well received by the Greek press.
New material is continually received and added to the Collection, which remains under the control of the Lyceum of Greek Women.

‘n Groot versameling boeke, teaterprogramme en oorspronklike teaterdokumente is deur mnr. Michal Grobbelaar aan die Biblioteek geskenk Die ongepubliseerde materiaal sluit o.a. in: oorspronklike Afrikaanse teatertekste, teaterprogramme van die Stadskouburg Seders 1945, dokumente van A-Teater Johannesburg, die Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns (Werksgemeenskap Witwatersrand), die Suid-Afrikaanse Instituut vir Teatertegnologie, Afrikaanse Taal- en Kultuurvereniging, Maatskappy vir Europese Immigrasie, die Johannesburgse Wynproewersgilde en die Suid-Afrikaanse Genootskap van Beroepsteaterbesture. Hierdie versameling bied ‘n unieke blik op die teatergeskiedenis van Johannesburg.

MICHAL GROBBELAAR COLLECTION
Mr.Michal Grobbelaar donated a huge collection of books, theatre programs and original theatre documents to the Library. This Collection provides a unique insight into the theatre history of Johannesburg. The unpublished material includes original Afrikaans theatre texts, Civic Theatre programs since 1945, documents of A-Theatre Johannesburg, the Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns (Werksgemeenskap Witwatersrand), the Suid-Afrikaanse Instituut vir Teatertegnologie, Afrikaanse Taal- en Kultuurvereniging, Maatskappy vir Europese Immigrasie, the Johannesburgse Wynproewersgilde and the South African Association of Theatre Managements.

RITA ELFERINK-VERSAMELING
Die Rita Elferink-versameling sluit baie goed aan by die Grobbelaar-versameling. Rita Elferink begin in 1959 by die SAUK werk, eers as vertaler en daarna by die buitelandse Afrikaanse radiodiens. Sy vertaal dramas uit Duits, Frans, Portugees, Nederlands en Engels in Afrikaans. Haar versameling bestaan uit oorspronklike vertaalde Afrikaanse tekste en ook uit oorspronklike Afrikaanse radiohoorspele, geskryf deur verskeie bekende Afrikaanse skrywers.

RITA ELFERINK COLLECTION
The Rita Elferink Collection perfectly complements the Grobbelaar Collection. In 1959 Rita Elferink started her career at the SABC, initially as a translator and subsequently as a presenter at the overseas Afrikaans radio service. She translated radio plays into Afrikaans from the original German, French, Portuguese, Dutch and English texts. Her Collection contains originally translated Afrikaans texts, as well as original Afrikaans radio-plays written by various well-known Afrikaans authors.

Dr. Gerhard-Mark van der Waal het in die sewentigerjare, in opdrag van die Stadsraad van Johannesburg, ‘n opname gemaak van alle bestaande historiese geboue in die stad. Sy doktorsgraad, Die boukuns van Johannesburg, wat hy in 1985 aan die Universiteit behaal, vorm die basis van die materiaal wat hy aan die Biblioteek beskikbaar gestel het. Sy versameling bestaan uit dokumente, foto’s, poskaarte, negatiewe, huisplanne en geskiedkundige dokumente oor geboue in Johannesburg en is deur die Biblioteek aangekoop.

The City Council of Johannesburg commissioned Dr. Gerhard-Mark van der Waal in the 1970’s to compile a list of all the existing historical buildings in the City. His doctorate, Die boukuns van Johannesburg, completed in 1985 at the University, forms the basis of the material which he offered for sale to the Library and which was bought by the Library. The Collection consists of documents, photographs, postcards, negatives, house-plans and historical documents relating to buildings in Johannesburg.

N.J. VAN WARMELO-VERSAMELING
Die Biblioteek het hierdie waardevolle antroplogiese skenking in 1997 in ontvangs geneem.
Dr. Van Warmelo was ‘n antropoloog-taalkundige en skrywer van wêreldformaat, met 29 boeke (12 as mede-outeur) en 25 wetenskaplike artikels (twee as mede-outeur) op sy kerfstok. Tydens sy ampstermyn as Staatsetnoloog (1930-1969), het die Etnologiese Afdeling 44 monografieë gepubliseer, waarvan hy 20 self geskryf het. Die etnografiese en etnohistoriese inligting oor die swart volke van Suid-Afrika en Namibië word hier aangebied in ‘n eenvoudige styl, wat die mondelingse inligting van die spreker onveranderd weergee, vergesel van ‘n vertaling en interpretasie. Van Warmelo se omvattende persoonlike biblioteek sluit o.a. sy eie magnum opus, Anthropology of Southern Africa in periodicals to 1950, asook boeke in vele swart en ‘n aantal Europese tale in.
Die res van die Versameling bestaan uit artefakte, waaronder pragtige kralewerk, nou historiese foto’s wat destyds in situ geneem is, mikrofiches, negatiewe, lêers met etnologiese inligting en werksmateriaal gebruik tydens die opstel van die Van Warmelo woordeboeke, ens.

N.J. VAN WARMELO COLLECTION
This valuable anthropological collection was donated to the Library and Information Centre in 1997.
Dr. Van Warmelo was an anthropologist-linguist of international standing. A prolific writer, he published 29 books (12 as co-author) and 25 scientific articles (two as co-author). During his term as Government Ethnologist (1930-1969), the Ethnological Section published 44 monographs, 20 written by Van Warmelo himself, recording ethnographical and ethno-historical data on the Black peoples of South Africa and Namibia. Facts are presented in an unadorned, oral-history type style, recording the verbatim information of the spokesperson with a translation and an interpretation. His extensive personal library includes these monographs, his own magnum opus, Anthropology of Southern Africa in periodicals to 1950, and books in numerous Black and some European languages.
The rest of the Collection consists of artifacts, e.g. beautiful beadwork, now historical photographs then taken in situ, microfiches, negatives, files containing ethnological data and working material used in the compilation of the Van Warmelo dictionaries, etc.

W.B. VOSLOO-(KSOK-)VERSAMELING
Dr. W.B. Vosloo, eerste Besturende Direkteur van die Kleinsake-Ontwikkelingskorporasie (KSOK), het sy uitvoerige versameling dokumente, wat dateer oor die bykans agtien jaar wat hy die hoof van die KSOK was, in Mei 2000 aan die Universiteit geskenk.
Die dokumente bied ‘n unieke insig in die Suid-Afrikaanse politieke ekonomie gedurende die 1980’s-vroeë 1990’s en is ‘n waardevolle navorsingsbron in dissiplines soos Ekonomie, Politieke Studies en Historiese Studies. Die verandering in die verhouding tussen die KSOK en die Staat is byvoorbeeld goed gedokumenteer.
Benewens die amptelike KSOK-dokumente, -korrespondensie, –opleidingsprogramme en -publikasies, sluit die skenking dr. Vosloo se toesprake (1986-1995) in, asook materiaal oor die kleinsakebeleid en -klimaat in ander lande, soos Europa, Australië en die VSA.

W.B. VOSLOO (SBDC) COLLECTION
Dr. W.B. Vosloo, first Managing Director of the Small Business Development Corporation, donated his extensive document collection to the University in May 2000.
The documents provide a unique insight into the South African political economy during the 1980’s and early 1990’s and are valuable research material for various disciplines, e.g. Economics, Political Studies and Historical Studies. The change in the relationship between the SBDC and the Government is, for instance, well documented.
Apart from the official SBDC documents, correspondence, training programs and publications, the Collection also includes Dr. Vosloo’s speeches (1986-1995), as well as information on the small business policy and climate in other countries, e.g. in some European countries, Australia and the U.S.A.
