Operational Director

Biographical

Prof Jenny Clarence-Fincham is the Operational Director of the Division of Academic Development and Support, with more than twenty years experience in Teaching and Learning, Applied Linguistics and Academic Development.  

She began her university career as the Director of The English Language Development Scheme at the then University of Natal and was responsible for the introduction of the first credit-bearing module in academic literacy and for co-ordinating the development of a  new major in Applied Language Studies, work which culminated in a Distinguished Teacher’s award.  She then served as a Head of Department, as Head of the School of Language, Culture and Communication and as Deputy Dean in the Faculty of Humanities where she was responsible for Teaching and Learning in the Faculty and for Academic Development, which focused on the design and implementation of an extended four year curriculum for educationally disadvantaged students.

As Operational Director, Professor Clarence-Fincham is responsible for oversight and coordination of strategy and operational matters in the four centres in ADS. Her research interests are broadly in the Field of Academic Development as it has emerged in the South African context and in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, particularly the development of innovative curricula.
