Cooperative Learning at UJ
The Academic Development Center hosted a Cooperative Learning Workshop from the 6 June –10 June 2011. The aim of this workshop was to explore cooperative learning as a model for tutoring. Collaborative Learning as a tutor development model, does not require small learning spaces and can easily be used in large venues with the supervision of a lecturer and tutor assistants.
This workshop focused on providing lecturers, tasked with working with tutors, with the strategies needed to implement cooperative learning as a model for tutor development. In addition, the workshop incorporated outcomes that were pertinent to the UJ context, that being, managing tutorials in large classes, increasing retention, and promoting positive attitude towards the subject matter.
The workshop was facilitated by Professors Roger and David Johnson who are Co-directors of the Cooperative Learning Center at the University of Minnesota. Professors Roger and David Johnson are widely recognized as experts in the field of cooperative learning.

The Buzan Mind Mapping Workshops
The Buzan mind map is a thinking tool to help you organise , memorise and recall information and knowledge. Learning Development on the DFC has organised a series of Buzan Mind Mapping workshops for all the extended diploma students.
11 workshops have been held for a total of around 600 students, while 11 more and 2 staff workshops are still in the offing. Each student received a mind mapping pad and a set of fibre tipped pens to help them draw and visualise the concept.
Mr Payne, the licensed instructor of the Buzan course, is inspired by the scholar Goethe who said, “What you can do or dream you can begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.” He believes that growth can be inspired through creativity, innovation and learning.
Each of the groups will have a follow up workshop to ensure that they are able to implement what they have learnt and thus benefit fully from the mind mapping workshops.

ADC Student Conference 2011
| Students encouraged to achieve their full potential
Find your voice, achieve your dreams. From the moment you begin your academic career at a university you have the opportunity to develop academically, spiritually, socially, and professionally. Be all that you can be and make South Africa a better place.
This was the sentiment expressed by award-winning South African journalist and radio presenter, Mr Stephen Grootes when he engaged with students at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) during the annual Student Conference in July 2011. The conference with the theme GOOD 2 GR8 was aimed to motivate students during their first year of study and was hosted by the UJ’s Academic Development Centre (ADC).
Alumnus Mr Tshepo Tsotsotso , presenter at Kaya FM and e-TV as well as Mr Setlogoane Manchidi from Investec talked about their journeys from student to journalist and businessman, frankly discussing the highs and lows of their pathways to success along with their visions for the future and their ventures. |

“Greatness is a by-product of commitment, passion, hard work, and achievement and one can never be too great unless they work continuously harder to be great,” said Mr Terry Tselane, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Gauteng Film Commission. He commended UJ for offering some of the best study programmes. “UJ is changing the lives of many students with different backgrounds. UJ ensures that that each student, whether you black, white, poor or rich, reached their full potential.”
“The majority of students come from disadvantaged or dysfunctional backgrounds which have often prevented them from achieving their potential. We aim to provide these students with positive role models who can inspire them to be successful and motivated not only in their studies but also in life no matter what hurdles they may encounter,”
Feedback from the students via Twitter was full of compliments for the style and content of the talk, with comments including:
“Just had the most inspirational talk. I’ve never felt so motivated to go ahead and achieve my dreams as I do now”
Other motivational speakers who shared their success stories with students include Ms Joyce Jabane-Bauwens, Project Engineer at Protea Mining Chemicals; Mr Thubalethu Nzuza, a 22 year old UJ student doing Bing. Mechanical Engineering; Ms Shabnam Mayet, a Human Rights Lawyer; Mr Caesar Mahlami, final year student in Engineering Metallurgy at UJ; and Mr Setlogane Manchidi, Head of Investec’s Corporate Social Investments (CSI).
