Prof. E de Kadt

Professor Elizabeth de Kadt
Academic  Development and Support
Executive Director

Biographical

Professor Elizabeth de Kadt, Executive Director of Academic Development and Support, joined UJ in November 2007.

She holds a BA(Hons) in Modern Languages (English, French and German) from the University of Natal, followed by a D Phil from the Albert-Ludwig Universitaet in Freiburg, Germany, where she specialised in mediaeval German literature. Her academic career was spent at the former University of Natal, where she lectured and published in German Studies and in Linguistics. Her focus on European languages was complemented by a growing interest in isiZulu; in 1989 she completed the three-year undergraduate programme offered by the Department of Zulu at the University of Natal, and then began to expand her research interests to include isiZulu, leading to publications in the fields of comparative pragmatics and politeness studies.

In the later 90s she was appointed as Head of the School of First Year Studies in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Natal. This led to a growing interest in the needs of first year students, in academic development, and in alternative access to higher education. Subsequently, in 2004, in the context of the merger which formed the University of KwaZulu-Natal, she was invited to assume the position of Executive Director: Access in the University Executive, for a period of four years. During this time, the Access portfolio matured into a portfolio which addressed much more broadly issues of teaching and learning, and the success of all students.

As Executive Director of Academic Development and Support at the University of Johannesburg, Professor de Kadt is leading the introduction of the First Year Experience project, and is promoting the integration of the four Centres in ADS into a strong and vibrant Division which makes a meaningful contribution to the well-being and success of UJ students.
