What is the Residence Support Programme?
The University has five residences on its APB campus, 14 residences on the APK Campus and seven residences on the DFC Campus. Of these, two are co-ed residences on the APB Campus and such a residence also exists on the APK Campus. The co-ed residences are meant for post-graduate and international students.
This Unit presents two programmes at the residences, namely the Residence Development Programme and the Residence Advisor Programme.
The Residence Development Programme is designed to assist students in acquiring skills with which to manage personal and academic challenges successfully. This programme is geared to educate, support and inspire UJ students. It is a pre-determined programme and presents pre-selected topics specifically chosen to address the needs of students. Intern psychologists are tasked with the development and presentation of these workshops at residences on a rotational basis. This is part of their own training and delopment year programme as interns. Their workshop manuals and presentations are, of course, supervised by PsyCaD’s registered psychologists.
The Residence Advisor Programme trains senior students in basic communication skills and in identifying students at risk of academic failure. This programme is part of UJ’s ‘Residences as Centres for Academic Success’ campaign, which stems from collaboration between Academic Development and Support and the department of Student Housing. Residence Advisors are trained over three days by both PsyCaD and the Academic Development Centre. This training entails a comprehenisve academic and social mentoring programme.
