The permanent and intern psychometrists in the Centre report directly to the Director: PsyCaD. It is their responsibility to carry out psychological assessments. The results of these assessments are used to assist prospective students to make informed career choice decisions. Results also are used to guide students who are at risk of dropping out (F5 students) as well as those who already have been deregistered, to make alternative career choices.
This function within PsyCaD is reponsible for a wide range of assessments: career counselling assessments, academic related assessments (referrals by UJ faculties); Grade 9 subject choice assessments, school readiness assessments, scholastic/psycho-educational assessments and emotional assessments. These assessments include the measurement of knowledge, abilities, attitudes, interests and the personality traits of our clients, who range from age four to adulthood, to help people better understand themselves and to provide some form of guidance and counselling.
The psychometrist are based on the APK campus of UJ from where they also serve the other campuses when assessments are booked. Their function also helps generate income for PsyCaD.

PsyCaD psychometrists’ community engagement project: Metropolitan-RAUCALL School
The Metroplotan-RAUCALL School is a community school in Crosby, near UJ, which historically has been part of UJ long before the university merger took place. RAUCALL was established by the former Rand Afrikaans University as part of its social responsbility programme. This happened nearly two decades ago in 1992 at a time when schools were still racially segregated. There also were few opportunities for learners from previously disadvantaged areas. RAUCALL sought to provide opportunities for selected high school learners from disadvantaged communities to study at tertiary education institutions.
This school provides education with a fixed curriculum comprised of seven subjects. From its inception, excellence has been the hallmark of the project. In its short history, the school has had great success, achieving a hundred per cent matriculation pass rate ever since the fist class matriculated in 1996.
With the establishment of PsyCaD in 2008, a RAUCALL project team was created in order to provide continuous support to RAUCALL learners from grade 8 to 12 regarding their holistic career development.
Due to the shortage of people power at PsyCaD since 2010, mainly caused by the international economic downturn, only two psychometrists support this project. However, Ms. Sugretta du Toit and Ms. Fatima Jogie still manage to assess 460 learners annually. In addition, they have presented three career counselling workshops for grade 11 learners. Additionally, there is a standing arrangement that any learner of the school who wishes to can visit PsyCaD for a full career counselling process.
