 About Teaching and Learning

The University of Johannesburg’s focus on excellence in teaching and learning is lead by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor:  Academic, and supported by the nine Faculties, the Division of Academic Development and Support and the Division of Academic Planning and Policy Implementation.

The University of Johannesburg accomplishes its strategic goal of excellence in teaching and learning, by developing and sustaining an enhanced learning and teaching environment that contributes optimally to the education of its students. The facilitation of teaching and learning at UJ seeks to respond to the complexity and rapidly changing nature of the social, economic and intellectual environment for which its students are being prepared, and to nurture traits of active thinking and meaningful engagement with learning. UJ seeks not only to produce well-informed and responsible graduates, but to develop in our students an enquiring mind and the ability to use knowledge to solve complex problems.

Such learning facilitation places considerable demands on teaching staff at UJ. Only appropriately qualified employees teach in our academic programmes, staff is encouraged to reflect on and research the practices of teaching and learning for continued improvement, and the University places great emphasis on the continuing professional development of its academic staff, and on finding appropriate ways to acknowledge and value excellent teaching.
