Academic development and support at UJ falls under the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic. It is constituted by the Division of Academic Development and Support (ADS) and the much smaller sister Division of Academic Planning and Policy Implementation (APPI). The management team is led by Professor Elizabeth de Kadt (Executive Director of academic development and support), Professor Jenny Clarence-Fincham (Operational Director of the Division of Academic Development and Support (ADS), and Ms Trish Gibbon (Director of the Division of Academic Planning and Policy Implementation (APPI)).
The Division of Academic Planning and Policy Implementation (APPI) is responsible for developing, implementing, maintaining and monitoring various institutional policies and procedures in line with National Higher Education policy directives and recommendations. Key areas of responsibility are Academic Policy, Enrolment Planning and Management, Curriculum and Programme Development, the Citizenship Curriculum, contributions to Faculty Governance, and management of the SANTED project (South Africa - Norway Tertiary Education Development Programme, now concluded).
The Division of Academic Development and Support (ADS) maintains focused activities, centred around core strategic thrusts and, together with the Executive Director, is involved in a number of UJ initiatives, such as the First Year Experience, the coordination of First Year Orientation, National Benchmark Testing, compilation of the UJ Teaching and Learning Report and coordination of the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Awards for Teaching Excellence.
