Afrikaans-medium teachers training college was established in the former Con Cowan Junior High School in 1961. In 1962 close on one hundred female students were housed in the newly completed nurses residence at the new hospital built on the former Auckland Park Race Course. Some 60 male students were accommodated in the flats between Herald and Grouse Streets. An additional 50 female students were housed in the barracks that had been used by the wits war veterans until 1949. Later the residences on the Brixton ridge were erected and named
Panorama and Majuba, after the mountain where Boer commandos defeated the British army in 1881. Prefabricated buildings were erected to serve as temporary lecture halls until the new campus was completed in the early 1970s. New lecture halls, a library and auditorium were constructed on the site to accommodate the new college. The campus served as a teachers training college until it closed in 1987.
