Babette Taute Scholarships

U
P

  • The late Babette Taute left the major part of her estate to establish a bursary trust for stu-dents of English. Applicants must be South African citizens or have permanent resident status in South Africa.
  • Students of any branch of English language and literature study, including applied language studies, are eligible for the awards, but study directly related to English must constitute a major or at least 50% of the year‟s work. The undergraduate and post-graduate scholarships are awarded for full- time study only. The amounts awarded and the number of awards in each category may change from year to year.
  • Awards are made on merit, broadly interpreted. A really good academic record is a requirement for an award. However, the trustees are also interested in other forms of merit. These might include leadership in cultural or social areas, quality of public-ations, and excellence as a teacher of English or a translator.
  • Scholars and bursars may hold other awards, provided that the total value of awards held may not exceed R25 000.

The trustees have decided to make awards in three cate-gories:

Book bursaries of R2 000 each for part-time final year under-graduates and part-time Honours students in their final year of study. Full-time applicants who do not receive scholarships will also be considered.

Undergraduate scholarships of R11 500 each for full-time students entering the final year of study for their degrees.
