As a first year in university, one of the best ways to get the full benefits of varsity life is to be in a residence. Kruinsig Ladies Residence is situated on the Auckland Park Kingsway Campus of the University of Johannesburg. We pride ourselves in leading a well-balanced social and academic life.
As a first year, you will move into res before the seniors do. This ensures that first years get orientated with res and campus life. This move is also before classes start so that any activities do not take time away from studies.
During the orientation period, first years have the opportunity to take part in a variety of events exclusively designed for them. One of the main events is the annual First Years’ Concert. Kruinsig won 2nd place in the Ladies’ Category this year, and came 3rd over all!! RAG is another event that is loads of fun and also very rewarding. Every year the residences take part in RAG – which stands for Remember and Give – which is a charity orientated drive to raise funds for those in our community who are less fortunate than ourselves. The main event during RAG is the float procession. This takes place on a Saturday in early February. It takes weeks of preparation to get a float built. A Ladies House and a Men’s House work together on this project. This year Kruinsig RAGed with Vorendag Men’s Dayhouse and achieved a 4th place over all.
First years in Kruinsig are called “Flimpies”. The name has to do with our mascot (“Kardoesie”), a flamingo which we have adopted at the Johannesburg Zoo. Within the first 3 weeks of being in res, first years accompany the house committee to the Zoo to meet Kardoesie.
Our motto is “Friendship and Individuality”. Keeping to this motto ensures that everyone in res gets along well and keeps up a positive atmosphere, as well as a positive relationship with other residences on campus. To ensure this we greet all members of the house – the house mother and her family, the house committee, the mentors, the seniors, the first years, the cleaning staff, and the guards.
As the transition from high school to university and, especially from home life to varsity life can be emotionally challenging, each residence appoints a group of mentors or “Voogde” every year. The mentors move into res before the other seniors do so that they can acquaint first years and help them adjust to residence and varsity life. Each first year is assigned to a “Voog group”. This offers first years a support structure – not only with a senior member of the residence, but also with fellow first years on a more personal level.
Being part of the Kruinsig family is one of the best decisions you will make in life. Residence is all about having fun and participating – through participation you will get to know yourself better and also have a whole lot of fun. Kruinsig Ladies Residence offers you the chance to grow as an individual in a friendly and supportive environment.
We look forward to meeting you “future flimpie”!!!
