Broadcast Court was founded by the South African Broadcast Cooperation (SABC). Technikon Witwatersrand (TWR) then took over in 1998 and turned B.C., formerly known as Broadcast Court Residence, to a mixed senior residence. In 2005, Broadcast Court then came to be under the University of Johannesburg (UJ) due to the merger between Rand Afrikaanse Universiteit (RAU) and Technikon Witwatersrand which was also known as Wits Tech.
Broadcast Court since its TWR times to date is known for excellence in sports academics. Since the merger, Broadcast Court has had a number of students who form part of Provincial and National teams in various sporting codes. Broadcast Court also engages in interest competitions each year against Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and University of Pretoria (Tuks). Although Broadcast Court faces a great challenge with regards to netball, Broadcast Court has won in all sporting codes against TUT since 2006.
We acknowledge and encourage students at Broadcast Court through a year-end function that is held every year, with the exception of the two previous years, at which students are presented with awards of excellent achievement in Sports and Academics.
Broadcast Court Residence comprises of people of different cultural groups who all come together to form one unified family. The bond amongst the students is strengthened through sports and other social events which require team work and unity.
Since the merger in 2005, the University of Johannesburg is going through a major transformation, experiencing and adjusting to some changes.
For us as the University of Johannesburg Residence, transformation is something very new and exciting, and daunting at same time. And this year we have the opportunity to personalise our residence, giving Broadcast Court its own individual identity.
We have green and white as our colours and a bold gold crown as our logo going along with the long-lived slogan for Broadcast Court:
“Before everything Comes us”
Rituals and Traditions
The crown brings along side Broadcast Court traditions:
- At the beginning of the year we have a Welcome Function known as Ice-Breaking.
- Mid-year we have sports day where we compete with the residences of the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT).
- At the year-end function we crown our sports and academics achievers in the form of trophies and certificate.
