4.
Undergraduate Studies
In order to study for a South African degree you need the equivalent of a South African senior certificate/high school certificate with matriculation exemption or foreign conditional exemption. Therefore your school-leaving certificate needs to be evaluated by the South African Matriculation Board, that forms part of Higher Education South Africa (HESA). You are required to contact the Board yourself and to submit a certified copy of your school-leaving certificate by mail or by fax. You might be charged a fee.

At the University the various faculties have different M-score requirements for entry and admission requirements. It is important that when you apply to the University you include a copy of your academic records (which must be certified) together with the exemption confirmation letter from HESA.

4.1 Important information regarding admission
• Candidates who have written the 'O' level or equivalent examination and who are not writing any other school-leaving examination are not eligible for admission to the University.
• If you are in possession of 'O' and 'A' Level qualifications from countries that conduct these examinations themselves and are not administered by British examining bodies, you must produce documentary evidence that you would qualify for admission to a British university.
• If you will be writing 'A' Levels and require a study permit but will receive your results only at the beginning of the following year, you will unfortunately not be considered for admission. You will not obtain your study permit in time for registration, so you should apply for admission for the following year.

4.2 Credits for subjects previously completed at another university
If you have completed a few subjects at another university that could count towards a degree at the University of Johannesburg, you must forward your original academic record as well as the course outline to the relevant faculty with a request for credits.

5.
Postgraduate Studies
Application for postgraduate studies at the University of Johannesburg must be addressed to the relevant academic department or faculty. Please include the following documentation.

• A curriculum vitae and a short research proposal (outline of intended research area) of no more than one A4 page.
• A motivation stating why you want to study at the University of Johannesburg
• A copy of the English proficiency test – IELTS (for more information, please see the section How to Apply, English Language Proficiency).
