About the First Year Experience (FYE)

What is FYE?

The First Year Experience (FYE) is conceptualized as a holistic programme which encompasses all aspects of the first year student experience. It attempts to establish an ethos through which all first year students will experience the transition into university life. FYE comprises both curricular and extra-curricular activities.

Why an implementation of a First Year Experience Programme at UJ?

The University of Johannesburg has long been involved in initiatives to support student success, especially at first year level. Despite significant successes, these initiatives have generally remained isolated. The FYE attempts to draw the best from current practice and to develop a coherent transitional experience for incoming students.

School to university transition has been identified as a major problem area: Students often find the transition t from school to university a difficult feat to accomplish. The transition has been described as "somewhere between a challenging hurdle and an intimidating leap into the unknown". FYE seeks to manage the school-university transition: if students perform well in first year, they will be much more likely to stay and succeed. Quit simply, FYE would like students to enjoy their time at UJ.
