 Postdoctoral Funding

The postdoctoral fellowship may be funded via a combination of sources, both internal and external. All postdoctoral researchers are expected to apply for an external fellowship prior to, or during, the fellowship itself (depending on the timing). Postdoctoral fellowships at UJ vary from R160K to R180K per annum depending on the area of research.

Internal sources of funding are the central UJ fund, faculty, departmental or research funds. The host of the postgraduate research fellowship establishes the fellowship amount and presents the award via the UJ Award Letter and MoU. The Award Letter and MoU are signed by the postgraduate research fellowship, host, Head of Department and the Executive Dean. A copy of this document is submitted to Ms Dudu Mbatha from the Postgraduate Funding Support section with the contact details of the postdoc. Ms Mbatha liaises directly with the postdoc to collect the required documentation for registrationas a PRF at UJ. Further details on the registation process are provided in the relevant section below.

External Postdoctoral Research Fellowships are offered by the following organisations:

 National Research Foundation
 Medical Research Council
 Claude Leon Foundation

Please note that all funding opportunities advertised below are prefixed with the closing date for applications/submissions. Please read the relevant opportunity for more details.
