 Postdoctoral FAQ 

What do I, as an International Postdoc, need to do before commencing with the Postdoctoral Fellowship at UJ?

  • You need to obtain the correct visa – it is easier to apply for a visa with the South African embassy before coming to South Africa.
  • Bring proof of your PhD qualification from your PhD-granting institution.
  • Obtain proof of membership of a South African medical aid/health insurance cover. If you have not yet secured your medical aid/health insurance, the UJ medical aid consultant can assist by providing you with information on the various options available and assist you with the application process.
  • You need to submit proof of membership of a South African medical aid/health insurance scheme as soon as possible after arriving in the country to take up the PDRF scholarship.
  • It remains your responsibility to pay the medical aid/health insurance contribution.


What do I, as a South African Postdoc, need to do before commencing with the Postdoctoral Fellowship at UJ?

  • Bring proof of your PhD qualification from the institution where you graduated.
  • If you are not yet a member of a South African medical aid/ health insurance scheme you need to apply for South African medical aid/health insurance cover before commencement of your Postdoctoral Fellowship. The UJ medical aid consultant can assist by providing you with information on the various options in terms of medical aid cover and with the application process.
  • If you have not submitted proof of membership of a medical aid/health insurance cover within 30 days after registering as a PDRF your registration may be cancelled.
  • It remains your responsibility to pay the medical aid/health insurance contribution.


What do I need to be aware of, and what do I need to bring along?

  • Your Department/Centre will provide a computer, stationary and other equipment you may need.
  • As a foreigner you will not be eligible for a loan from a bank for big purchases.
  • Transportation is your own responsibility. The following are possible options: taxis, bus (Re a Vaya - www.­reavaya.­org.­za, Metrobus - www.mbus.co.za/), rent a car (or bring enough money to purchase a car).
  • A printed/hard copy of your UJ Postdoctoral Fellowship MoU should allow you access to the campus upon arrival.
  • After registration you have to obtain a UJ access card, which will allow you access to the campuses and library.
  • You will have access to the library, parking on campus, and an email address.
