In South African terms, one of the benchmarks against which research capability is measured is the number of NRF-rated Researchers affiliated to an institution.
UJ presently has 90 rated researchers, 5 of whom have been awarded the prestigious NRF A-rating. The NRF defines A-rated researchers as "Researchers who are unequivocally recognised by their peers as leading international scholars in their field for the high quality and impact of their recent research outputs".
