2011 First Year Top Achievers


The University of Johannesburg (UJ) annually honours and awards bursaries to top achieving first year students. These are students who excel in the categories: Degrees, Diplomas, and Faculties.

2011 UJ Diversity Week: Staff Activities

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) employees celebrated Diversity Week from Monday, 19 to Friday, 23 September at the four campuses. Various cultural activities took place on different days at the four UJ campuses.

Diversity Week: International Student Festival 2011

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) annually hosts Diversity Week at its four campuses. During this time, UJ staff and students participate in various cultural events that bring all UJ community together. Diversity Week is usually celebrated around September. At this event, UJ international students showcased their traditions at the UJ Kingsway Campus.

NPC Launch at UJ 25 August 2011 

The National Planning Commission's (NPC) Chairperson and Minister in the Presidency, Trevor Manuel and fellow NPC commissioners launched the “NPC Jam” on Thursday 25th August at UJ. The “NPC Jam”, a live 72 - hour online discussion will take place from 28th September until 1 October 2011.

  • Various inspiring youth leaders shared their positive visions with UJ students about the kind of South Africa they would like to see in the year 2030.
  • Trevor Manuel speaks to UJ students in an open dialogue at the University's Arts Centre, about his future vision for South Africa in the year 2030.
  • Kholofelo Selepe, UJ SRC President, registers on the NPC Jam website, to join in as a member of the dialogue. The South African youth will be expressing their views for the positive change of the country on the Jam.
  • The inspiring DJ Sbu (real name Sibusiso Leope) registers on the NPC Jam, to become part of the positive change in the South Africa that the youth would like to see by the year 2030.
  • Two UJ students who would love to see South Africans express a different welcoming attitude towards "people with different capabilities" by the year 2030 and beyond. They are all for transformation.


2011 Discovery 702 Walk the Talk
 

Some 570 University of Johannesburg (UJ) employees from various departments and faculties participated in the 2011 Discovery 702 Walk the Talk, the biggest charity event in South Africa. It is organised annually and it took place in the leafy suburbs of Johannesburg on Sunday, 24 July.

Open Day 2011

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) annually organises an Open Day at its four campuses: Kingsway, Doornfontein, Soweto, and Bunting Road. During Open Day, learners from various schools in Gauteng, and other parts of South Africa, spend a day at the University to learn and find information about careers offered by the Institution. This year’s Open Day was held on Saturday, 14 May.

Law Faculty 2011 Welcome Address

UJ’s Faculty of Law annually hosts a welcoming function for its post-graduate students at the University. The dean of the faculty, Professor Patrick O’Brien presents a welcome address for the current academic year, immediately after the students have registered and commenced with their studies. This year’s welcome address took place at the Arts Centre at the Kingsway Campus.

Launch of Foundation Phase Teacher Education Programme

South Africa’s Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and the Department of Basic Education launched a Foundation Phase Teacher Education Programme at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) on Wednesday, 13 July 2011. The initiative is designed to strengthen Foundation Phase Teacher Education in South Africa’s public universities.

June 2011 Exams

Examinations for the first semester at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) have kicked off. Students enrolling in various Degree and Diploma courses are put on paper what they have learned during the semester, working for access into the second semester. These students are enrolled in the Faculty of Management.

Governor Gill Marcus at Soweto Campus

The Governor of the South African Reserve Bank, Gill Marcus, addresses small and medium business owners at the University of Johannesburg (UJ)’s Soweto Campus on the following:

  • Inflation and economic growth
  • The South African Reserve Bank and the fight against poverty

This took place on Tuesday, 29 March 2011, and was hosted by UJ’s Centre for Small Business Development.

First Series of 2011 Graduations

First series of graduations at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) takes place during the first week of March each year. Students completed their studies in carious courses graduate at the University’s Auditorium on the Kingsway Campus, where the Senate of the University hand qualifications to the students who are enrolled in different courses.

2011 Local Government Election Debates

The University of Johannesburg (UJ), in collaboration with the SABC news, hosted the 2011 Local Government Elections at the University’s Auditorium on the Kingsway Campus. The debates were broadcast live on SABC 1, SA fm, and SABC.com between 18:30 and 19:30 every Sunday, starting from Sunday, 27 February 2011 until the last Sunday before the voting day: 18 May. Various political experts participated in the debates.

2011 Late Applications at DFC

Thousands of late applicants applying to be admitted to register for the 2011 academic year at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) flocking to the University to pursue a chance to further their studies. This took place in January 2011 and received much media attention.

CSBD Public Lecture with Mr. Pravin Gordhan

South Africa’s Minister of Finance, Mr. Pravin Gordhan, visited UJ’s Soweto Campus to engage with small business owners on how the national budget, announced in late February 2011, will affect their businesses. This took place on Thursday, 10 March 2011.

Highgrove Florilegium 2011

The Archiving, Institutional Repository and Special Collections Department at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) acquired a limited edition of the Highgrove Florilegium, a prestige book illustrating the plants grown in His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales’ Highgrove Garden in Gloucestershire, England.

Minister Blade Nzimande meets Drivers of Business Centres

South Africa’s Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Bonginkosi Emmanuel "Blade" Nzimande, met with various stakeholders from twenty three universities in South Africa, at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). The meeting was aimed to solicit funding of business centres at educational institutions to grow Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
