A record number of 326 first-year students at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), who obtained an average of 75% or more in the June 2010 examinations, were highlighted and celebrated at a luncheon at the Auckland Park Kingsway Campus on Friday, 10 September 2010.
This year produced the highest number of top achievers since the inception of UJ. In 2005, the first-year top achieving group amounted to 239, followed by 200 students in 2006 and 2007. The years 2008 and 2009 produced 189 and 195 top achievers, respectively. Five top achievers matriculated from Rand Park High and another five from Northcliff High. Glenvista High School, King David School (Linksfield) and Parktown Girls High School each produced four top achievers.
Seven students obtained an average of 89 plus per cent. Aisha Mia, who matriculated from Parktown Girls High School, is studying BCom Accounting and has obtained an overall average of 93.8 per cent. Tshegofatso Marumo received a more than meritorious second place with an average of 90 per cent. Marumo is studying towards a National Diploma in Financial Information Systems, and she matriculated from Vryburger Hoërskool. Carla de Wet, who matriculated from Witteberg Secondary School; Luca Giacovazzi, who matriculated from Reddam House Combined School, Walter Mapfumo, an international student, and Takura Makurunje, also an international student, are all studying towards a BCom Accounting degree and received an average of 89 plus per cent. Berdene Sinclair received an average of 89 per cent and is studying BCom Finances. She matriculated from The Hill High School.
204 of the top achievers are from the Faculty of Economic and Financial Sciences, followed by the Faculty of Management with 48 top achievers. The Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment had 18, 17 and 16 top achievers, respectively. The Faculty of Health Sciences yielded seven and the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture each boast five top achievers. The Faculty of Law and combined degrees each had three top achievers.
The top achieving students were treated to a luncheon at the Auckland Park Kingsway Campus by Prof Ihron Rensburg, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UJ. Guests at the prestigious function comprised of representatives of the schools where these top achievers matriculated, accompanied by their headmasters and members of their leadership bodies.
