The Institutional Statute of the University of Johannesburg Government Gazette 33492 no 749 determines in section 83 (1) the membership of the Convocation as follows:
(1) Membership of the Convocation consists of –
(a) Alumni;
(b) The Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Deputy Vice-Chancellors and Registrar of the University;
(c) Permanent academic employees of the University; and
(d) Retired permanent academic employees of the University.
Note: All UJ Alumni and Alumni of the Former Rand Afrikaans University and Technikon Witwatersrand are members of the convocation.
