The Academy of Computer Science and Software Engineering of the University of Johannesburg is the first University in the southern hemisphere offering a BSc Hons (IT) degree which was formally accredited by the highly respected and professional British Computer Society (BCS). This accreditation confirms the international standard and quality of this course.
The BSc (Hons IT) has been fully re-accredited for the period of five years from 2008 – 2012.
Academy scoops top awards at Microsoft Imagine Cup 2011
The Academy would like to congratulate its students who represented both it and the University of Johannesburg at the South African round of the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2011. In particular it would like to congratulate team Asclepius for winning the South African cup, SoftwareScience for placing a close second and Team Nyble for winning the Interpoerability award. The Academy and University are very proud of you.

Projects Day 2011 a success
The Academy successfully held its 25th Projects Day. On display were high quality systems developed by both senior undergraduate and post graduate students. Systems ranging from dynamic database driven websites, cloud deployed service based systems, rich internet applications, mobile device deployed systems and GPGPU technologies were on offer.

Projects Day 2011 Invitation

The past quarter of a century has seen many changes. The Academy of Computer Science & Software Engineering may have a new name but it is proudly continuing its tradition of academic excellence. The Academy welcomes you to attend our 25th Annual Information Technology Projects Day. On display will be development projects and research at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
Top Achievers Lunch 2011
The Academy of Computer Science & Software Engineering honoured its top achieving students at a lunch during September 2011. These students represent the best and the brightest from both of the major disciplines within the Academy (Computer Science and Informatics) and from all cohorts (first year to honours level). In addition to receiving a certificate detailing their achievement and a light lunch the students were given presentation by senior post graduate students (Masters and PhD) regarding the fields of research within the Academy. It is the hope of the Academy that these students will continue to excel and study further within whatever discipline they choose.

Winter School 2011

The Academy will be running its highly successful Winter School in order to assist Matric Candidates in order to help them prepare for their upcoming examinations. The Winter School will cover both the Delphi (11-15 July) and Java (22-26 August) programming languages and includes a great deal of hands on practical experience as well as course material to aid in self preparation for the examinations.

Academy Adjunct HOD wins Distinguished Service Award

The Computer Society of South Africa announced on November 2010, that it would be confering its Distinguished Service in ICT Award to Professor von Solms.
Academy Adjunct HOD wins Pioneers in Computer Science and Information Technology Award

The South African Institute for Computer Scientists and Information Technologists (SAICSIT) recently founded the Pioneers in Computer Science and Information Technology Award. It is intended that each year SAICSIT would seek to honour persons that made major contributions over a lifetime to the disciplines of Computer Science and Information Technology in South Africa.
On 12 October 2010, at the Gala Dinner of SACSIT’s Annual Conference in Bela-Bela, SAICSIT awarded such a Pioneer Award to Prof Basie von Solms for his contribution to Information Technology, and specific Information Security, over the last 40 years. He was also honoured for his international role as President of IFIP, the International Federation for Information Processing.
Prof von Solms was introduced by Prof Elize Ehlers who initiated the proposal of Prof von Solms for the Award.

The Academy would like to congratulate Prof von Solms for being awarded the Kirstian Beckman Award. The objective of the award is to publicly recognise an individual, not a group or organisation, who has significantly contributed to the development of information security, especially achievements with an international perspective
