Projects

Departments in the Faculty are actively involved in community engagement. The projects are:
- Safety seminars on the handling of dangerous chemicals and laboratory safety are presented by the Department of Chemistry to clients of MERCK Laboratory Supplies.
- The Department of Zoology renders a service to a wide variety of community sectors such as higher education, education structures, public and private service sectors as well as the general public. The training of teachers takes place and a diploma is obtained after completion of the Zoology course. An advisory service is rendered by means of research projects and consultation services. The Department is also actively involved in SCIENTIAE . Adopt a Stream is a new project that SCIENTIAE and the Department of Zoology would like to launch.
- The generation of electricity through the manufacturing of thin-layer solar cells by Physics will have a huge impact on the quality of life of the people of Africa.
- The Academy for Information Technology is involved in MES's computer literacy programme by moderating computer literacy courses.
- The Department of Botany and Biotechnology is involved in the Omnia Agricultural Academy in Sasolburg where small farmers are trained in HIV/AIDS through the treatment of African Plant Medicine.
- The Department of Biotechnology is in a monitoring capacity involved in the bioremediation of Bruma Lake.
- The Faculty, in partnership with the South African Association of the Flavour and Fragrance Industry (SAAFFI), offers a short course in Flavour and Fragrance creation and application.
- Staff of the Department of Food Technology are actively involved with the South African food industry for the placement and monitoring of students for Work Integrated Learning (WIL). They also have input and representation on the following bodies and groups: South African Association for Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST), the South African Association of the Flavour and Fragrance Industry (SAAFFI), Cereal Science and Technology Southern African (CST-SA) which is affiliated to the International Association for Cereal Science and Technology (ICC), Food Legislation Advisory Group to the Dept. of Health (FLAG), Food Safety Management Scheme Committee of the South African Auditor and Training Certification Association (SAATCA) and the Standards Generating Body (SGB) for Food and Beverage Manufacturing.
- The Department of Mathematics is involved in a Teachers Program with the Faculty of Education. This program enables practicing educators to enrich and/or supplement their existing knowledge and methodology of mathematics.
- The Department of Mathematics is involved in UJ MAP (MATHS ADVANCEMENT PROGRAMME). This programme offers extra mathematics classes for learners in grade 11 and 12 to improve their mathematics for Matric and tertiary education. The extra mathematics classed are presented by staff and tutors from the Department of Mathematics at UJ. On the APK campus the extra classes run on Saturday mornings. UJ MAP together with the GDE (Gauteng Department of Education) identified weaker schools within the Soweto district to offer extra mathematics classes for these learners at the Soweto campus of UJ. The extra classes are presented on Fridays in the afternoon.
- The Mathematics Learning Centre is situated at the Department of Mathematics (C Ring 510) on the Kingsway Campus. It is open five days per week, at selected times, including lunch time – in total, the Centre is open for 30–35 hours per week. Information about the detail is displayed at the Department. Tutors are available to assist all levels of Mathematics up to third year. Mathematics students are encouraged to make use of this free service, in order to overcome the challenges of the subject. The Mathematics Learning Centre also runs revision tutorials for first year students on the Saturday before semester tests and exams. - An extended degree and diploma programme is presented to students. The primary objective of this programme is to equip students to gain access to science, engineering, IT and other relevant programmes including nursing, biokinetics, psychology and teaching. The programme aims to develop knowledge, skills and confidence in mathematical and scientific subjects as well as laboratory techniques. It also integrates the culture of higher education by developing different academic literacies and life skills in order to produce students who are adaptable and confident in the academic environment.
- SCIENTIAE (The Science Society of the Faculty of Science) acts as a liaison between the Faculty and the general public. Any school can participate in the meetings arranged by SCIENTIAE .
