Universities worldwide are incorporating entrepreneurship as part of their missions in response to its increasing importance in economic development. And our department is no exception. In fact, it’s leading the field as a destination provider of entrepreneurship research, studies and activities across all four campuses at the UJ, with the following objectives:
- institutionalise entrepreneurship education, backed up by curricula that are based on sound scientific research and not merely popular management theory.
- To focus on critically important skills and knowledge.
- To reconcile the tension between entrepreneurial theory and practice.
- To empower learners who have the professional/technical skills to become ‘technopreneurs’ and, ultimately, employers, not employees.
- To build on the existing foundations of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) and promote social entrepreneurship in conjunction with the Soweto Business Centre.
- To build a diverse membership, developing global networks and generating knowledge in multiple areas of entrepreneurship and SMME development.
