Community Engagement
Community Engagement (CE) is CE projects/programmes made available to communities through the application of UJ Resources for no financial consideration.
The Faculty of Management supports the Community Engagement (CE) policy and is in the process of developing a strategy for the Faculty of Management Community Engagement (FMCE) initiative with Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) as Platform. Specifically the STH and the Marketing Management department have indicated interest to participate in SIFE projects. Future projects include working with CENCE, an article 21 company, to become involved in CE outreach projects. Some departments have indicated reasons why CE is not a primary objective of the department including the low level of permanent staff appointments, high workload with regard to student numbers, staff qualifications and pressure on staff to improve their qualifications and their research output, together with current project and research expectations. Heads of Departments have identified two potential coordinators of CE projects, Dr Mercy Mpinganjira and Dr Marie Bounds. Prof Ed Bbenkele will drive the FMCE.
The Faculty of Management has a number of Community Engagement projects utillising in particular SIFE as a platform.
ABOUT SIFE
SIFE is an international non-profit organization that works with leaders in business and higher education to mobilize university students to make a difference in their communities while developing the skills to become socially responsible business leaders. Participating students form teams on their university campuses and apply business concepts to develop outreach projects that improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need. An annual series of regional and national competitions provides a forum for teams to present the results of their projects, and to be evaluated by business leaders serving as judges. National champion teams advance to the prestigious SIFE World Cup. In addition to the community aspect of the program, SIFE’s leadership and career initiatives create meaningful opportunities for learning and exchange among the participants as well as the placement of students and alumni with companies in search of emerging talent.
