Faculty of Law conferences, seminars and updates

The Faculty of Law regularly hosts thought-provoking public lectures presented by esteemed local and international guests. On 23 August 2012, Prof Sir Bob Hepple will present a lecture entitled ‘'Is South African Labour Law fit for the Global Market?". The event will take place at the University of Johannesburg School of Tourism and Hospitality (STH). More details will be provided in due course.

The International Labour Law and Social Protection Conference, will be hosted by the University of Johannesburg Faculty of Law and Centre for International and Comparative Labour and Social Security Law (CICLASS) from 27-30 August 2012 in Johannesburg. Confirmed key note speakers include Prof Dr Manfred Weiss (Germany), Prof Sir Bob Hepple (United Kingdom), Prof Dr Paul Blyton and Dr Jean Jenkins (Wales), as well as Prof André van Niekerk (Labour Court, South Africa).

 

Staff member scholarly undertakings

Dr Juanitta Calitz will be presenting a paper on Sovereign Debt and Bankruptcy Law at the INSOL International Academics’ Colloquium on 19 and 20 May 2012, at the Turnberry Isle Miami, Florida. The colloquium of the Academics’ Group attracts attendance and participation by academics from many countries so that the colloquium is notable for the quality of the papers presented and for the opportunity to engage in debate with leading scholars in the field of international and comparative insolvency law.

  

Prof Murdoch Watney will be attending an International Conference on Information (I-Society 2012) from 25 to 28 June in London, UK  and will deliver the following paper titled: "Cybercrime regulation at a cross-road: national versus transnational and global laws". 

Prof Jan Neels hopes to visit Canada in June and July and deliver a paper at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops (British Columbia) on 3 July 2012 on the topic of "Adaptation and substitution in the international law of succession".

Prof Nicola Smit is the organiser of a panel session on “Labour and Social Protection for Workers in the Informal Economy” at the ILERA (IIRA) World Congress 2012 to be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. The session is scheduled for the 4th of July. The chair of the session is Prof Manfred Weiss (JW Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany). Panel speakers include Prof Evance Kalula (UCT), Dr Jean Jenkins (Cardiff Business School), Prof N Smit (UJ) Ms Elmarie Fourie (UJ), Mr Monray Botha (UJ) and Prof Marius Olivier (International Institute for Social Law and Policy (IISLP)).
