Citizenship and Social Capital Project workshop
The NRF-funded research project on Citizenship and social capital hosted a two-day workshop in July. The fifteen co-workers on this project include faculty members of three South African and two Indian universities. Senior collaborator Prof Sujata Patel from the University of Pune, India, takes a break with members of the department on the last day of her visit. |
SASA conference 2008
 
The UJ Department of Sociology was a proud sponsor of the 2008 annual conference of the South African Sociological Association, held in Stellenbosch from 7 - 10 July. Twenty-one delegates from UJ attended the conference and UJ junior sociology lecturer, Letitia Smuts, walked away with the first prize in the student essay competition that was judged by esteemed sociologist, Prof Ari Sitas. The first student essay prize had also been awarded to a UJ sociology student, Rudzani Mudau.

Oxford University's Rhodes Chair of Race Relations visits UJ Department of Sociology
Prof William Beinart, Rhodes Chair of Race Relations at Oxford University, visited the Department of Sociology on 18 March 2008. He presented a doctoral workshop on political protest in South Africa, soliciting feed back on the draft of an introduction to a forthcoming book co-edited with Department staffer Marcelle Dawson. He is pictured here with Owen Manda, a doctoral student of the departmet and a researcher with the CSR. |
