SASA 

UJ Department of Sociology staffers are active members of the South African Sociological Association. The SASA website can be accessed at www.sasaonline.org.za.

President
The head of the UJ Department of Sociology, Prof Tina Uys, is a past president of SASA and the only woman who has served in this capacity to date. She served as SASA president from 2002 to 2004.

Treasurery
Three UJ Sociology staff members have served as treasurer of SASA:

  • Prof Tina Uys (1999 - 2001)
  • Liela Groenewald (2006 - 2008)
  • Pragna Rugunanan (2009 - 2010)

SASA journal
Three staff members have served on the editorial board of SASA's journal:

  • Prof Sakhela Buhlungu
  • Prof Ria Smit (Managing Editor)
  • Prof Tina Uys

SASA working groups
Three colleagues serve as working group convenors:

  • Elli Binikos (Family and Population Studies working group)
  • Liela Groenewald (Urban Sociology working group)
  • Dr Yoon Jung Park (Race and Ethnicity working group)

Top students
Postgraduate students of the UJ Department of Sociology have been the first to win the national student essay competition run by SASA and independently judged by respected local sociologists:

SASA office
Members of the UJ Department of Sociology run the SASA office on a voluntary basis. Currently, this work is handled by Liela Groenewald.
