Biographical
Yolanda Sadie, who holds an MA from Stellenbosch University and a PhD from Cape Town University, is a Professor of Politics. She has received a research grant from the Human Sciences Research Council and has been awarded an Academic Exchange Fellowship by the Association of Commonwealth Universities in London (1996) as well as a Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowship to Cambridge University (for 6 months) from November 2003. With the former she spent three months as a research fellow at the Centre for Women’s Studies and Development at Panjab University in India. In 1995 she was also a research fellow (for 3 months) at the University of Texas at Austin. In 2004 she was appointed as an Associate of the Centre of African Studies, University of Cambridge.
From 2000-2006 she served as a member of the Council of the South African Association of Political Studies (SAAPS). Since 2003 she is the Chair of the Research Committee "Women, Politics and Developing Nations" of the International Political Science Association (IPSA). In 2007 she was also appointed to the Council of the African Institute of South Africa (AISA)
Attached to the University of Johannesburg (then the RAU) since 1989, Prof Sadie specializes in Political Science. Her teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels focuses on comparative politics, public policy-making, as well as gender politics. She has supervised 8 MA dissertations (4 cum laude), 6 MA mini-dissertations (1 cum laude) and three doctoral theses.
At present her main research interests are democratisation in Africa, especially the quality of democracy, and the role of women in political decision-making in South Africa. Having received a research grant from IFAS, she is, in collaboration with Prof M Schoeman (UP), currently undertaking a comparative study of the voting behaviour and political attitudes of the youth in South Africa and the DRC. This is the first phase of a project that is to be extended to other countries in the SADC region. Prof. Sadie occupied the role of Chair of the department from 2000 to June 2007.
