Albert Venter is Professor in the Department of Politics at the  University of  Johannesburg, South Africa. He holds the degrees of BSc. in Food Science, (University of Stellenbosch), Hons. BA, MA and D.Litt. et Phil. in Political Science (Unisa).

Appointments held

Managing Director of Granor-Passi, 1970-75.
Manager Cook-Freeze Factory: Transvaal Provincial  Hospital Services 1975-78.
Lecturer  Political Science: University of Pretoria 1979-80.
Senior Lecturer Political Science: Unisa 1981-87.
Associate Professor: Political Studies RAU, 1988-1994.
Professor of Politics at RAU since 1994.
Chairman of the department of Political Studies at RAU - 1989-1997, served on the Dean’s Committee of Faculty of Arts
Guest Professor at: The South African Defence College, The Naval Staff College, The Foreign Service Institute, Potchefstroom University, the National Intelligence Academy.
Member of Senex of UJ 2005-2008, elected to Council of the UJ in August 05-June 07

Publications

One hundred  articles in professional journals and contributions to books on Political Science. Editor and co-author of four  textbooks: South African Government and Politics: Southern Books 1989, Politics: an introduction for Southern African students: Oxford University Press, 1991,  and The Government and Politics of the new South Africa, JL van Schaik, 1998, a second edition of this book was published in 2001. The third edition was published in April 2006.  Editor of five other volumes in Political Science and Foreign Policy. Editor of Politeia, Unisa, 1983-84 and Assistant Editor Plural Societies, Den Haag  1989-92. Member of the editorial advisory board of  The World and I, Washington and the SAIPA Journal (1994-1997). Various research reports and political risk analyses for private companies. Forty articles and op-ed pieces in South African newspapers and popular scientific journals.
 
Professional Associations

Council member and Secretary / Treasurer of the South African Political Studies Association, 1987-1997. Vice President of SAPSA 1997-1999.  Council Member of South African Institute of Public Administration -1994-1996. President of PWPA SA since 1990. In June 1999 prof. Venter was elected President of the SA Political Studies Association for the 1999-2001 term. Full member of the South African Academy for Science and Art (Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns). He also served on the National Council of the Academy 2005-2008.

Research interests

Political Theory, comparative politics, cognitive training for critical thinking, plural societies, cabinet government, South African politics, political risk assessment. Professor Venter is a regular commentator and contributor to the radio, news papers and television.
