Welcome to the Department of Philosophy

Philosophy is an argumentative enquiry into fundamental issues of human life that the sciences do not address. For example, in philosophy courses you can expect to debate issues such as whether God exists, what the difference is between right and wrong, and whether truth is relative.

  • Philosophy helps you to write logically and clearly, as well as to read challenging texts
  • Philosophy enables you to exercise your freedom wisely
  • Philosophy lets you interpret your life, society and world in an authentic and autonomous manner
  • Philosophy promotes discerning observation of human behaviour
  • Philosophy helps you to make up your own mind about complex issues, because it facilitates the analysis and evaluation of ideas and arguments
  • Philosophy cultivates intellectual energy and enthusiasm

Philosophy is a subject that gives you skills and ways of thinking that are valuable for any career. If you would acquire the skills and attitudes mentioned above, philosophy will give you the edge!

  • We want to make innovative and relevant philosophical contributions through our research, teaching and community service.
  • We want to develop relevant skills and insights in our context and debate them with the national and international philosophical community
  • We want to practice philosophy independently, creatively and with social awareness

“To offer high quality education that fosters [i] a love of philosophy, [ii] an appreciation of the value thereof, and [iii] the virtues to excel therein.”
