 About UJ Historical Studies

The Department of Historical Studies began in 1967, as the Department of History, with the founding of the Rand Afrikaanse Universiteit. The first chair of the Department was F.A. van Jaarsveld, who came to RAU from UNISA.

In 2004/5, when RAU merged with Vista University and the Technikon Witwatersrand, the RAU Department of History merged with the Vista history department to form the new Department of Historical Studies. At this point, the staff numbers in the department increased from four to seven.

The Department has an average of 500 undergraduate students. In 2011, it has a contingent of 18 Masters and PhD students.
