Certificate Programme

The Department of Sport and Movement Studies presents two certificate programmes. These qualifications use current industry-specific knowledge to equip learners with skills for successful employment.

The Certificate in Sport Administration focuses on providing learners with working knowledge and skills in the field of sport management and to understand the environment in which sport takes place.

The Certificate in Sport Coaching focuses on providing learners with working knowledge and skills in the field of sport coaching and to understand the environment in which sport takes place.

Career Opportunities

Certificate in Sport Administration

Qualified sport managers will be able to occupy a variety of positions, including:

  • Sport Administrator
  • Sport Facility Manager
  • Gymnasium Manager
  • Sales Representative
  • Sport Club Manager
  • Sport Team Manager
  • Sport Event Organizer

Certificate in Sport Coaching

Qualified sport coaches will be able to occupy a variety of positions, including:

·        Coaching in different sporting environments

·        Fitness trainers 

Levels of Study

The certificate is registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) at Level 5, which is part of the further education and training band.

Learners studying the Certificate in Sport Administration will complete the following modules:

Each module will run for one week. Theoretical examinations will take place twice yearly, from May–June for the first half of the modules and October–November for the last half of the modules. The pass requirement for the examination is 50% in every module, in order to obtain the certificate. Lectures are presented in English, but may ask questions and answer their papers in Afrikaans. Compulsory lectures are presented on average one week per month. It is recommended that students who are employed on a full-time basis conduct their studies over two years, as payments are made per module.

Entrance Requirements

Applicants must have a senior certificate (Grade 12) or relevant experience in the sport industry.

2.    Together with this form the applicants must provide

  • A certified copy of their results,
  • A certified copy of their ID document
  • Proof of payment for application.

3.      Please note that the completed application form and proof of payment must be submitted to the Student Enrolment Centre on the ground floor of the Madibeng Building
