UJ’s creative stool designs

The Department of Industrial Design 3rd year students recently participated in the Elle Decoration SOLVE competition for 2011. Joe Paine, a previous graduate of the department and renowned SA furniture designer, acted as a part-time lecturer and mentor for the students for this project.

University of Johannesburg Departments of Multimedia and Graphic Design recently collaborated in a project to design games for use as promotional tools for a book launch. One project was selected as finalist in the Loerie Awards and went on to win a Pendoring Award.

Art intervention in rural community

University of Johannesburg BTech Degree students from the Department of Visual Art participated in the National Research Foundation Community Engagement Programme (NRF CEP) in a rural area in Limpopo province. The students used arts-based methods to elicit positive responses to HIV/AIDS issues within the community.

Two UJ students selected as finalists in SABS Design Achievers Award

University of Johannesburg students from the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA) are finalists in the 2011 SABS Design Achievers Award. Ms Peggy Ntsepe (4th year BTech Degree Graphic Design) and Mr Leonard Lindeque (3rd year National Diploma Fashion Design) will participate in the Design Achievers Workshop from 15 to 19 June 2011.

Design Indaba Young Designers Simulcast 2011 at University of Johannesburg

In February 2011, for the first time ever, Johannesburg-based young designers were also be able to experience the Design Indaba Conference, via a simulcast, at the University of Johannesburg. The simulcast gave the young designers access to a selection of 47 of the world's leading creative minds including the likes of Alberto Alessi, Mark Shuttleworth, David Butler, Maarten Baas, Michael Wolff and Robert Wong.

Industrial Design students participate in Energy Efficient Lighting Design Competition

Article that was published in Workplace - The Star: 2010-06-17:
You can enter the competition by submitting an innovative energy-efficient design system or product, suitable for residential use.
The goal is to have imaginative lamp prototypes that work, are pleasing to the eye, and, as the name of the competition implies, use energy-efficient light sources. Cash prizes can be won in both the student and professional categories. However; the value of the competition ultimately lies in encouraging South Africans to design innovative products



 

FADA Alumni make their mark on the Soccer World Cup

Two of the UJ’s Faculty of Art Design and Architecture alumni members are basking in the knowledge that their designs are entrenched in this year’s Soccer World Cup.
Gaby de Abreu, Group Creative Director and co-founder of Switch Design Group, was selected from top graphic   designers to design the official logo and poster for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa.
Jonathan Fundudis, an industrial designer and owner of Snapp Design, was also commissioned to design, and produce 64 Budweiser Man of the Match trophies to be given to an outstanding player after every game.
