The SAB Foundation website describes the awards: “The SAB Foundation Innovation Awards has been established with the objective of rewarding and upscaling innovative sustainable solutions to the pressing daily challenges facing persons in low-income areas, specifically women, the youth, persons with disabilities, and persons in rural areas in order to improve economic growth and prosperity and the quality of life of all South Africans.”

The website goes on to say, “The SAB Foundation Innovation Awards will be specifically focused on innovation solutions which have progressed past ideas, and have reached proof of concept stage (i.e. require piloting and testing), and now need a strong focus on commercialisation or scaling-up. The SAB Foundation Innovation Awards is designed to assist the applicants along the path towards commercialisation, scaling up and replication of their innovation solution – with the aim that it will reach and benefit significant numbers of the target beneficiary groups of the SAB Foundation."
