Architectural professionals are involved in shaping the built environment. Their efforts are evident everywhere, from the simple construction of a low-cost housing project to the most sophisticated technology employed in the erection of skyscrapers. Architectural professionals are employed in the design, technological resolution and management of construction projects.

The architectural profession offers a wide range of specialisations, from management to technology and design. Students will be able to register with the following professional bodies/institutes:

  • South African Council for the Architectural Profession
  • South African Institute for Architectural Technologists
  • Some Provincial Institutes of the SA Institute of Architects

Three years full-time.

Entrance requirements

Entrance Requirements: Applicants currently in Grade 12 or completed high school in 2008

A minimum APS of 23 is required to apply for the programme. Mathematical Literacy is not accepted for this programme. The Life Orientation score is divided by 2 when calculating the total APS. Click here for full details on calculating the APS score, the relevant minimum score required per subject.

Entrance Requirements: Completed high school before 2008

This scoring system is used if the applicant completed school prior to 2008 or A/O levels. A minimum M-score of 12, with a minimum of three subjects on higher grade and an E-symbol or higher grade in Mathematics or a C-symbol or higher in standard grade Mathematics, is required to apply for the programme. Applicants meeting the minimum entrance requirements (APS or M-score) will be invited to attend an entrance assessment and to submit a prescribed portfolio.

Selection Criteria

Selection is based on an entrance assessment and the submission of a prescribed portfolio.

The entrance assessment will be conducted by the UJ Centre for Psychological Services and Career Development (PsyCaD). Invited applicants must make a booking to attend one of the following selection assessments (4½ hours) starting at 08:45:

Monday, 27 August
Monday, 3 September
Saturday, 15 September
Monday, 1 October
Monday, 8 October
Monday, 22 October
Saturday, 3 November

Venue: D Les 303, Auckland Park Kingsway Campus (Cnr University and Kingsway Roads) - not the campus where the Architecture Department is situated.

Within two weeks of attending one the earlier entrance assessments indicated above, but no later than 5 November 2012, applicants must submit a prescribed portfolio as described below.

Portfolio Deadline

Portfolios must be submitted within two weeks of the applicant’s attending the selection testing but no later than 5 November 2012.

Applicants will be informed of the outcome of the assessment in an official letter, and the portfolios must be collected by 31 January 2013.
