 Background FADA

The Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA) is committed to fostering creative and professional excellence in art and design education. This dynamic and exciting Faculty has a colourful 80-year history during which it has been associated with numerous highly successful individuals in the world of art, design and architecture.

The Faculty is home to approximately 1 200 students who study and work in the custom-built FADA Building on the Bunting Road Campus. Conveniently situated in the building are a number of specialised workshops, studios, computer laboratories, common lecture venues, an auditorium, gallery and library.

Many of our graduates are employed in South Africa or internationally in diverse areas of industry, or work as freelance designers, architects or independent artists. Whatever their preference, they have been properly prepared as professionals through creative and entrepreneurial development, which are key factors in the programmes offered.

The Faculty works closely with industry to ensure that its programmes remain relevant and to keep students constantly exposed to changes occurring in the practising worlds of art and design. Throughout the year recognised national and international artists, designers and academics are invited to address students. The FADA Gallery hosts a series of cutting-edge exhibitions throughout the year and the annual student exhibitions showcase the best student work for public viewing.

Research is a strategic focus of the University of Johannesburg and is supported within the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, promoting both individual research as well as group based research projects. In 2007 the FADA Research Centre, Visually Identities in Art and Design, was established. The content and thrust of the research within the Faculty is determined by a combination of individual research interests, strategic objectives of the University of Johannesburg and national priorities.
