Contexturise
Official Opening: 18:00 for 18:30 on Wednesday, 16 May 2012
Exhibition Dates: 14 - 26 May
Fibreworks is proud to present Contexturise, an exhibition by leading South African textile and fibre artists.
The title of the show, Contexturise, embodies some interesting words - context, text and texture - and these words in turn allude to a whole range of thought provoking ideas. All the artists in this Fibreworks group, irrespective of their fine art or quilting backgrounds, are obsessed with the idea of texture and how this important element is played out in their work.
A wide variety of natural and man-made fibres such as cotton, rope, nylon, paper and wool, are knotted or knitted, layered or sewn, even burnt. All these materials enjoy an irresistible tactile immediacy. Their ready-made qualities conjure up a whole host of personal associations that the individual viewer may bring to the work.
Certain materials, for example velvet and woven grass, are particularly heavy with cultural and traditional meaning and significance. Like sculpture, some fibre artworks grapple with space and many of the “tactile-textiles” project a powerful physical presence, conveying a here-ness as opposed to the there-ness of traditional painted imagery.
Fibreworks representative Jeanette Gilks points out that “as text has intriguingly muscled its way into the word texture, so will its verbal meanings muscle into the feel and look of many of these artworks.”
Contexturisecan be seen at the University of Johannesburg, FADA Gallery, Bunting Road campus, from 14th to 30th May 2012. Gallery hours are 10h00 to 16h00, Monday to Friday.
