The Department has excellent and dedicated teaching staff, many of whom are actively involved in both advanced research and community related work.
Four research groups are active in the Department, and recent research output includes the publication of a range of journal papers, books, chapters, research reports and conference papers.
The Department is home to fully-equipped, modern laboratories and equipment, while strong links exist between the Department and industry and professional associations.
The Department has a strong post-graduate student body and staff are active in the development of post-graduate students. Presently post-graduate study opportunities exist in Energy Studies, Materials Science (particularly Titanium machining), Composites and in a co-operative group with the Faculty of Health Sciences in the area of computer aided detection and diagnosis for radiographic imaging of the thorax.
Programmes offered by the Department are accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
