National Diploma in Extraction Metallurgy
Minimum Entrance Requirements
These are the MINIMUM entry requirements required for study. Further selection criteria may be applied.
Current entry requirements (until end 2007 i.e. the Senior Certificate or current matric):
- Senior Certificate;
- M-Score 12;
- Mathematics (HG:D)/(SG:B);
- Physical Science (HG:D)/(SG:B);
- English (First Language) (HG/SG:pass) or English (Second Language) (HG:E)/(SG:C).
New entry requirements (from end 2008 i.e. new National Senior Certificate):
- Minimum APS 21;
- Minimum Ratings:
- English (LOTL) = 3;
- Other Recognised Language = 4;
- Mathematics = 4;
- Life Orientation = 4;
- Physical Sciences (Subject 1) = 4;
- Subjects 2 & 3 = 2. (APS calculation: rating for Life Orientation is divided by 2).
Purpose of the programme
A qualifying learner at this level is competent in basic metallurgical process operation and problem solving thus contributing to the needs of the metallurgical industry and mining community. The qualified person will be able to register with ECSA as a Technician.
Outcomes
Exit-level outcomes
The qualifying learner will have the ability to:
1. Apply metallurgical principles to plants and processes and operate relevant metallurgical laboratory and plant equipment.
2. Collect, process data and evaluate information on different plant parameters.
3. Show responsibility towards safety and health and the environment.
4. Implement communication skills to write reports and make oral presentations supported by effective non-verbal information.
5. Apply technical and administrative principles to metallurgical plants and processes.
6. Demonstrate the ability to perform under pressure using own initiative.
