 About Extraction Metallurgy

Extraction Metallurgists specialise in the extraction of metals and minerals from run of mine ores. They control and design process improvements in order to optimise the recovery of the metals and minerals from the ores. These processes often require further refining stages to purify the metals extracted.

Extraction Metallurgists focus on recovery efficiency and cost control. Sampling at various stages in the process is an important aspect of plant control to ensure target recoveries are achieved.

Analysis of these samples requires metallurgists to be familiar with chemical analyses as well as other sophisticated analytical techniques.

In order to successfully extract the valuable constituents from an ore, physical, chemical and sometimes pyrometallurgical processes are used in a carefully selected sequence. Each stage concentrates the ore further until ultimately a final saleable concentrate or refined product is produced and can be released on to the market.

A strong interest in science and technology is required for success in extraction metallurgy, as well as an ability to work in a team alongside other professionals such as mining, mechanical and electrical engineers, geologists and process operators.
