The Department has close ties with the metal industry, giving students exposure to a wide range of metal-related operations and ensuring that learning is aligned to industry demands.
Graduates are equipped with sound knowledge of production, design and manufacturing of metals and mineral products. They are employed in the private and public sectors.
The Department aims to produce capable engineering metallurgy technicians and technologists who can contribute to the metal industry in South Africa.
A specialised Metal Casting Technology Station is located in the Department. Funded by the Department of Science and Technology, the Station supports local foundries in metal casting skills and technology and is playing an important role in developing capacity in the Small Medium and Micro Enterprise (SMME) metal casting sector.
Programmes offered by the Department are currently accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
