Professor Tshilidzi Marwala

  • Professor Tshilidzi Marwala was appointed as the Executive Dean, Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment in Jan 2009.

General

  • In 2009 Electrical Engineering students made a breakthrough by successfully flying an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) propelled by a hydrogen fuel cell.   A model J3 Piper cup airframe was fitted with a 100w fuel cell and a brushless DC motor for the testing. 
  • Mr Martin Lewis, Head of Department, Town and Regional Planning was elected and appointed to serve on the South African Council for Planners (SACPLAN) as Alternate Chairperson.
  • Dr Georg Endress Instrumentation and Automation Centre of Excellence was launched at FEBE on Friday 20th February 2009.
  • In 2008 Mr. R. Ebrahim and Mr. Marry Calder won the Robotics design competition held by National Instruments. They worked under the guidance of Mr. Pat Ellis from Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering and Mr. Daniel Van Niekerk from the Department of Power and Control Engineering.
  • The students from the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering Technology and the Department of Power and Control Engineering Technology successfully competed in the 2008 Siemens Cyber Junkyard automation design competition.
  • In 2007 the UJ Civil Society had a vision to take their annual tour to Dubai in 2008. On Friday, 29 August 2008 that vision came into fulfillment, the UJ Civil Society boarded Kenyan Airways headed for Dubai.

Women in Engineering

  • Women in Engineering and the Built Environment at UJ formed a committee in Jan 2009 to discuss the events to be held in August 2009 and the strategic plans for the year. The committee members are Ms. Hannelie Nel (Vice-Dean, FEBE), Ms. Nickey Janse van Rensburg, Ms. Corina Mateescu, Ms. Tamara Morgan and Mrs. Meera K. Joseph. WiEBE at UJ formed a student society at the Doornfontein Campus on 18th Feb 2009.
  • Society for Women in Engineering and Technology (SWiET) pre-launch took place on 22nd May 2009 at APK campus University of Johannesburg. Dean made an appearance, encouraging the girls to study hard and to keep on studying and furthering their education.
  • The 2008 Women in Engineering summit took place at the venue, Melrose Arch on 28th August 2008. You may view photos on the past events link at www.uj.ac.za/wie.

F1 in schools

  • The F1 in Schools challenge national race event took place at Kyalami race track on the 5th and 6th of March 2009. Some FEBE staff were invited as judges for the national event. Mr. Johann Fouche, Ms. Rea Fouche, Ms. Tamara Morgan and Mrs. Meera Joseph represented the Faculty and judged the verbal presentations, display and portfolios of the F1 in Schools team members.

Metal Casting Technology Station

  • Ms Hannelie Nel (Vice-Dean) and Mr Farouk Varachia (Manager of the Metal Casting Technology Station) undertook a study and information tour to Germany to strengthen UJ's ties with the foundry industry and to build on the Memorandum of Agreement signed with the Technical University Bergadakemie Freiberg in 2007. 
  • UJ hosted Dr. H. Polzin from University of Freiberg from 3rd August to 16th August 2008.  He visited Universities and industries in South Africa and presented two technical papers at the SAIF.
  • Dr. Morris Murray an Australian Die Casting Specialist, internationally known, presented a lecture on the 9th March 2009 to S4 students in the Department of Engineering Metallurgy.
  •  Tshumisano Trust of the National Department of Science and Technology granted a R15 million cash boost to efforts by the Metal Casting Technology Station at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) to fortify research, innovation and technology transfer assistance to the metal casting industry.  MCTS (Metal Casting Technology Station) based in the Department of Engineering Metallurgy at UJ and the DST (Department of Science and Technology) through its agency Tshumisano renewed their contract for a further three years.
  • The MCTS now offers 3D rapid prototyping of sand moulds to the foundry industry.
