 Winter School 2011

Dear Participant

Welcome to the 3rd SOCIAL SCIENCES METHODOLOGY WINTER SCHOOL! This year again, the Universities of Johannesburg and Basel are presenting the annual Methodology Winter School to invest in human capital and to strengthen international and interdisciplinary research ties. We continue to offer four kinds of courses and workshops: research design, qualitative methods, quantitative methods, and courses relating to a research career (e.g. project management, publishing, and career strategies). This year, participants can enroll in a stream which covers the introduction to statistics, which will enable them to take two successive courses that build on each other.

We aim at providing participants with opportunities for developing research skills, professionalization, and forming a research network that includes institutions, instructors, and course participants.

Course participants will benefit in a number of ways. First, competent instructors will introduce participants to various introductory or advanced research methods and techniques through lectures, exercises, and assignments. Second, participants will be sharing working and thinking space with other researchers such that critical thinking and application of the methods and techniques will be fostered. Third, they will find opportunities to discuss their substantive research plans within a context that is likely to lead to the expansion of the participants? existing research network.

Some courses must limit the number of participants but we hope to feature these courses again in the 4th SOCIAL SCIENCES METHODOLOGY WINTER SCHOOL in 2012. Also for 2012, we are aiming at offering more courses and streams, some of which will be covering the course material of a regular semester course.

We wish you productive and enjoyable encounters during the 3rd SOCIAL SCIENCES METHODOLOGY WINTER SCHOOL. Please see the overview page to get an idea what is on offer this year.
