 Message from the Dean

Message from the Dean

At the beginning of a new year one tends to look back and to look forward.

2011 was an eventful year at the Faculty of Education. The research output was increased significantly. We also managed to more than double our first year intake in the BEd programme. Another significant event in 2011 was the relocation of the Executive Dean’s Office as well as the Departments of Educational Psychology and Leadership and Management to the Soweto campus. A new department was also established on this campus, namely the Department of Childhood Education.

In 2012 the number of prospective students who applied to the BEd programme, and who met all the admission requirements, has once again far exceeded our enrolment target.  We have also experienced a significant growth in PGCE numbers. We are delighted that so many young people are interested in the teaching profession.

A special word of welcome to those students who are enrolling for the first time in the BEd and PGCE. You are becoming part of a faculty that is committed to serving and building education. In this faculty you will have the opportunity to become caring, accountable and critically-reflective practitioners. We aim to prepare you for a profession in which you will know how to support and nurture learning and development in many different educational contexts.

You will get the opportunity to interact with many tutors and lecturers and to explore new ideas and perspectives on education.  Enjoy your time in our Faculty and grasp the opportunities that are offered to you for learning and for expanding your horizons.

To our new post-graduate students: The Faculty’s mission says that we are committed to the systematic pursuit of education knowledge that is dynamic – knowledge that is relevant to the SA context and that has international standing.  We are pleased that you are now part of this pursuit and we look forward to your contribution.

To all our students and stakeholders: We invite your comments and critique. Please share your suggestions and ideas with Faculty tutors and lecturers, heads of departments and of course also with me as Dean of this Faculty.

We wish you a blessed and fruitful 2012.
