The Academy of Computer Science and Software Engineering of the University of Johannesburg is the first University in the southern hemisphere offering a BSc Hons (IT) degree which was formally accredited by the highly respected and professional British Computer Society (BCS). This accreditation confirms the international standard and quality of this course.
The BSc (Hons IT) has been fully re-accredited for the period of five years from 2008 – 2012.

Academy Team wins Local Finals in Imagine Cup 2013
On 11 April 2013 a team from the Academy of Computer Science and Software Engineering won the 2013 National Competition in the South African leg of the Microsoft Imagine Cup. The team was placed first in the “Innovation” category, and was selected as the National Winners of the South African leg of the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2013. The project also won a prize for best use of the Microsoft Azure platform in their system.
The finals of the South African Imagine Cup was contested by 14 teams in various categories who were selected from over 70 initial projects. The team will now represent South Africa and compete against teams from across the world in the international finals of the Microsoft Imagine Cup which will take place in St Petersburg, Russia in July 2013.
The team who consisted of Mr Jan van Niekerk, Mr Merrick Bengis, and Mr Lorenzo Boccetti, mentored by Dr Ian Ellefsen, developed a software system called “Sentimeter”. The system is a business analytics platform that mines information from social media sources. The judges commented on the outstanding quality of the system and their innovative use of technology.
The Academy of Computer Science and Software Engineering had a total of 4 teams competing in the South African finals of the Microsoft Imagine Cup. The Academy is proud of all its students that took part in the competition. The Academy has won the South African leg of the competition twice in a row and three times in the past four years.

July intake for Cyber Security Certificate
This Certificate is directed towards parties working full time and who wants to get a formal qualification in Information and Cyber Security. The Certificate is on NQF Level 5, and successful students will get an official Certificate from the University of Johannesburg. The course consist of 5 modules of 3 days each. Each module will be formally examined and all 5 modules must be passed to pass the course.

Academy student highlights experience within Coach Lab program
Thabo Mphuthi, one of the Academy's current MSc students gave a speech describing his experience as part of the Coach Lab program at a gala function in April 2013. Mr Mphuthi successfully completed the demanding program while simultaneously being completing his Honours Degree and also being involved in the masters level Ubiquitous Product and Service Innovation (UPSI) course. The Adacemy considers Mr Mphuthi to be a shining example of the high calibre of students it is proud to be associated with.
The Academy holds graduation ceremony for final IT Diploma cohort and inaugural Cyber Security cohort
The Academy is proud to have hosted a graduation ceremony for its first Cyber Security Certificate group and its final IT Diploma group. The IT Diploma has been superceded by the new Higher Certificate in Information Technology. The Academy is proud of the accomplishments of its graduates.
