The Department of Visual Art, previously named Fine Art, has entered a challenging new era: within a new comprehensive university architecture, which builds on the foundation of skills and knowledge for the visual arts industries; within our new home on the Bunting Road Campus in Auckland Park; and within the challenges facing the Higher Education sector today.
At no time in the past has there been such a growing need for strong and sound literacy’s within visual culture and identity. The Department, in realising this need, has developed its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to support and facilitate a passionate and articulate voice in both the students' work and lives.
Further, in an effort to enhance its offering to students, the staff is encouraged to promote a healthy environment of critical debate, research and art creation within national and international contemporary studio practice. Our students are taught to develop their technical, conceptual and communication skills in order to forge a career within the diverse visual arts industries.
We are proud of our diplomats, graduates and staff.

The best ‘things’ since sliced bread
Towards the end of every year, the UJ Faculty of Art Design and Architecture building is transformed into an art and design gallery, exhibiting the top work of senior students. The first of two end-of-year student exhibitions opened on 2 November, with the second exhibition opening on 22 November 2011.

Setups and Upsets – Exploring the work of Willem Boshoff
In October 2011, the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture Gallery hosted its annual Prestigious Alumni Exhibition featuring Willem Boshoff. The Setups and Upsets exhibition took an interesting approach to exploring this artist’s work. Viewers gained insight into his private workspaces and libraries which have inspired his art-making processes.

Art intervention in rural community
University of Johannesburg BTech Degree students from the Department of Visual Art participated in the National Research Foundation Community Engagement Programme (NRF CEP) in a rural area in Limpopo province. The students used arts-based methods to elicit positive responses to HIV/AIDS issues within the community.

Fine Art lecturer and graduate show their talent in Cape Town
Work from renowned SA artist and lecturer at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), Kim Berman, is currently exhibited as part of Painters Who Print at the SA Print Gallery and recent UJ Fine Art graduate, Siyasanga Madyibi has been invited to show her work as part of KR!SP at Art B Gallery.
