NATIONAL DIPLOMA: EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE and
BACCALAUREUS TECHNOLOGIAE: EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE
Purpose
The purpose of the qualification is to develop a student competent in the clinical knowledge and skills required for the emergency medical care and rescue profession.
The qualifying student will be able to competently apply an integration of theory principles, proven techniques, practical experience and appropriate clinical skills thereby:
1. Providing independent specialised emergency medical care and rescue service to all sectors of the community.
2. Demonstrating skills in management and research allowing the holder of this qualification to work independently and in a supervisory capacity within emergency services and the healthcare team.
3. Becoming a reflective practitioner and life long student in emergency medical care and rescue.
Outcomes
1. Demonstrate effective communication and apply the principles of medical ethics, professional behaviour and the legal framework to the context within which emergency care practitioners operate while maintaining personal health, wellness and safety.
2. Provide and facilitate emergency medical care to all sectors of the community utilising specialised strategies and technologies.
3. Perform medical rescue in a wide range of contexts.
4. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of human and basic sciences underpinning emergency care.
5. Provide in-service training in emergency medical care and rescue.
6. Demonstrate an understanding of the structure and function of Emergency Medical Service (EMS) systems in South Africa and provide operational and clinical supervision within an emergency medical and rescue service.
7. Develop research skills and conduct research in emergency medical care and rescue.

1. A Senior Certificate, or an equivalent qualification at an equivalent standard as determined by a Status Committee, with 2 of the following modules:
1.1. Biology or Physiology with at least a higher grade D or standard grade C symbol
1.2. Physical Science with at least a higher grade D or standard grade C symbol
1.3. Mathematics with at least a higher grade D or standard grade C symbol.
2. M-Score: 14
3. Candidates must pass the fitness assessment, the phobias evaluation and the medical examination in order to gain entry into the programme.
OR
A New Senior Certificate - APS Score with minimum requirements as shown below:

Selection criteria
Selection is based on academic merit.
1. Academic merit
2. A structured personal interview
3. Phobias evaluation
4. Medical examination;
5. Physical fitness and swimming proficiency evaluation;
6. An English proficiency evaluation;
7. Previous appropriate experience (a recommendation).
Pass requirements
1. In the case of Emergency Medical Care, credits for clinical practice (experiential learning), practical and theory modules are NOT retained. However, students retain credit for all other modules passed.
2. Students may enrol for a module in the following year, provided that they have passed the prerequisite modules.
3. Students must pass all the daughter modules to obtain credit for a mother module.
4. Students may not register for module combinations that lead to time-table clashes.
5. Students are granted:
5.1. full second-year status if they have passed all the first- year modules;
5.2. full third-year status if they have passed all the second-year modules;
6. First-year students must pass a minimum of 2 mother modules in the first year of study to qualify for readmission to the programme.
7. 100% attendance of all practical, experiential or clinical components is compulsory. If students fail to comply with this requirement, they may be disqualified from the final examination for that particular module.
The University of Johannesburg standard examination entry and pass requirements apply to
all modules, with the exception of the following:
1. To gain entry into the Medical Rescue I and II, modules, students must successfully complete the physical fitness evaluation.
2. Modular credits are retained for Medical Rescue I and II.

BACCALAUREUS TECHNOLOGIAE: EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE
Purpose

Clinical Practice (Experiential Learning)
1. Students must, by the end of each year, complete the requirements which are detailed in the EMC IV Student Guides in order to gain entry
into the practical and theory examinations.
2. Experiential learning (clinical practice) is rostered at set periods during the academic year in conjunction with cooperative partners and
is not personalized.
3. 100% attendance of all practical and experiential learning (clinical practice) is compulsory.
