Several bodies of leadership, namely UJ Council, Senate, and the SRC, exist to ensure the smooth running of UJ and making strides towards the University of Johannesburg becoming the institution it envisages.
The VC – assisted by a senior executive management team that comprises five deputy vice-chancellors, the Registrar, the nine executive deans of faculties and the executive directors – oversees ELG team that guides UJ on its way forward.
The Registrar’s portfolio consists of the following divisions: Central Academic Administration (CAA), Central Administration; Corporate Governance; the Unit for Quality Promotion (UQP); and Health and Wellness.
The Internationalisation office gives a map of UJ’s global network of collaborations and partnerships. It also offers students information and services they need in order to have a welcoming and pleasant stay while studying at UJ.
The Strategic Partnerships Department resides in the Advancement Division of the institution. The department consists of three sections: Strategic Partnerships, Alumni and Community Engagement.

The purpose of Naming Committee is reflect the underlying dynamic of the whole transition from three apartheid-style tertiary institutions to a single university, integrated in every respect, articulating the free spirit of our young democracy. Certain spaces were renamed as an integrative measure, some to honour great South Africans. Some spaces reflect that all four of UJ’s official languages should be equally weighted in giving new names.

We have recently started refurbishing the old Perskor building next to the Doornfontien campus. This impressive building will be the new home of the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment.
UJ is the first University to introduce handheld devices (a tablet or laptop) into first-year classrooms in 2014 - a bid to connect our young minds with an empowering tool that will encourage and facilitate engagement among students with each other and among students and academic staff
FADA, situated in the custom-built FADA building on Bunting Road, is home to approximately 1 200 students who study towards professional fields in art, design and architecture. Graduates go on to become employed in diverse areas in SA or internationally.
The Faculty of Economic and Financial Sciences (FEFS) offers a BAcc degree, selection of BCom degrees and diplomas aimed at meeting the growing demand for skills in the fields of accountancy, financial economics and econometrics, and finance.
The Faculty of Education offers Initial Professional Education of Teachers Programmes, Continuous Professional Development of Teachers Programmes as well as Masters and Doctoral Programmes. It is also the official custodian of the UJ Metropolitan Academy.
The Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment is the first in South Africa to offer global education of a full range of professional engineering qualifications accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa.
The Faculty is one of a few in SA that collectively offers courses traditional associated with the Health Professions Council of SA, SA Nursing Council, Allied Health Professions Council and other health disciplines.
Various BA qualifications are offered in Humanities, with programmes that are internationally competitive and locally relevant. Graduates become highly skilled and are able to work in diverse professional environments.
Law offers traditional law programmes such as BA/BCom Law and LLB, as well as LLM degrees by dissertation and coursework and LLD degrees. The Faculty also offers postgraduate diplomas, certificates and short courses in specialised areas.
The Faculty offers programmes designed to develop sought-after future business leaders, who ultimately have great job prospects within credible organisations. It is a faculty that has a culture of trusting in the power of knowledge, ideas and intellect.
The Faculty of Science comprises fourteen Departments, namely: Academy of Computer Science and Software Engineering; Applied Chemistry; Applied Mathematics; Biochemistry; Botany & Plant Biotechnology; Chemistry; Food Technology; Geography, Environmental Management & Energy Studies; Geology; Mathematics; Physics; Statistics and Zoology. Non-academic units housed in the Faculty include SPECTRUM (an Analytical Research Facility), the Faculty's Workshop and the Glass Blowing Unit.

There are five libraries located on the four campuses, providing information and research support for UJ students and staff.
UJ has benefited from a large pool of researchers bringing together various fields of expertise and research focus areas.
UJ has continued to pay marked attention to increasing the number of rated researchers, with the Research Office implementing a programme to identify potential applicants and to assist researchers to move from a lower to a higher rating.
The University currently has 99 NRF-rated researchers, and, having set a goal to double its accredited research output by the end of 2015, is on course to reach this target. UJ currently holds 6 Research Chairs.
The PGC consists of three structural functional areas, namely Funding Support, Information Services and Research Capacity Development, and aims to increase the number of postgraduate students at Masters and Doctoral level
Nationally there is a need to increase the number of postdoctoral fellows in South Africa. At UJ, the provision of postdoctoral fellowships supports and encourages research and contributes towards the university’s strategic goals.
Over and above to the funding provided by the Postgraduate Centre, UJ provides and promotes access to a number of sources of research funding. Opportunities for funding are also made available by the University Research Committee.

As with any institution that owns or can generate material of enormous wealth, this division ensures that UJ’s property and assets are adequately protected. This includes, patents, licences, trademarks, inventions as well as intellectual property.
IOHA aims to mainstream HIV and AIDS through all aspects of the University of Johannesburg’s core activities, striving to deliver a quality service to all students, in collaboration with internal, external and international partners.
UJ takes prides in its ability to provide resources and information in the four main languages that have been identified as prevalent within the UJ community. The Language Unit also offers translations services into English, Sesotho sa Leboa, Afrikaans and isiZulu.
Staff and students can access health care services on all four campuses. These services include wellness days, primary health care, health education and promotion, HIV/Aids counselling and testing as well as access to travel medication.
ICS at UJ deals with the accessing of information systems, telecommunications data processing, storage and distribution. They make sure UJ is able to deliver excellent higher education services through the appropriate IT support services provided.
