Introduction
The Department of Information and Communication Systems (ICS) at the University of Johannesburg deals with the delivery of information systems, telecommunications data processing, storage and dissemination.
VisionWe see Dynamic and Passionate ICS partnerships enabling UJ to deliver excellent higher education services
MissionWe enable UJ to meet its mission through the deployment of appropriate information and communication systems and competencies
Strategic objectiveEnsure business continuity through the alignment of ICS capabilities with the UJ business drivers.
The principle of business continuity requires that all the systems and technology that is deployed must be supportable and thus ICS has a standards setting responsibility that is aimed at ensuring the seamless interoperation of devices and technology that is required to give effect to the attainment of the UJ mission.
Important contactsUJ ICS has several divisional managers that manage the functions ranging from Service Desks, Solutions Delivery, Operational Management, Enterprise Systems Management, Enterprise Networks, Telecommunications, Campus Support and MIS.
ICS PoliciesICS has to operate within the ambit of the legal and institutional policies that ensure good governance.
Procurement of equipment and software
EquipmentWhilst UJ ICS stets the specifications for systems and equipment, ICS does not have a procurement function but sets the standards that will ensure the interoperation and integration of technologies.
SoftwareAll common business software that may be required to support UJ staff in their daily work is provided for by means of encompassing campus agreements. This software is free to the client.
Specialised software required for teaching and research is managed by the collective concerned and UJ ICS acts in an advisory capacity to ensure the most favourable procurement, interoperation and integration of systems.
GeneralProposals for the procurement of equipment, or software, has to be submitted to ICS for approval prior to procurement.
All procurement is handled by the Procurement Department. Details are here – Link to Procurement.
Systems ownership
UJ ICS does not own all of the systems entrusted to them.
As a matter of fact ICS could be likened to a stable that provides stabling for horses. Our task is to ensure that your horse is always available, well looked after, fed and preserved to your highest specification. But is stays your horse. Whilst ICS will co-operate in training users to master the use of systems, ICS is not responsible for the training of users to employ business systems.
Data ownershipExcept for those systems that ICS owns, ICS does not have a data ownership function. ICS has the responsibility to accept, store and represent the data that is entrusted to them in exactly the same state that it was received.
Data quality remains the responsibility of the data owner.
